Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include teaching, training, storytelling, discussion and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, however learners can also educate themselves. Education can take place in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational. The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy.
Formal education is commonly divided formally into such stages as preschool or kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and then college, university, or apprenticeship.
There are movements for education reforms, such as for improving quality and efficiency of education towards applicable relevance in the students' lives and efficient problem solving in modern or future society at large or for evidence-based education methodologies. A right to education has been recognized by some governments and the United Nations. Global initiatives aim at achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes quality education for all. In most regions, education is compulsory up to a certain age.
i want to know about environmental science education, what is this education exactly deals with can a student with a bachelor degree in mathematics can take this course.
Why doesn't the US use an education system similar to the one used in China? One in which only those who deserve to go to school can. The majority of people in public schools are not there for academic pursuits and continually ruin the environment for those who are. Why shouldn't there been a...
Hey! Any1 knows anything about Russia's education system or some russians here could explain to me what the hell are they teaching you in school that you guys are simply dominating math/computer science competition, I'm just amazed at the results. My exact question would be: What is the learning...
I've found this fantastic essay (with a very apt title) by Paul Lockhart on the (sad, sad) state of mathematics education in North America.
Here is the link: http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf
It's definitely worth reading for all educators out there.
If you sign up for a course in say health care and your instructor says you may not question the current thinking on health care. doesn't that make sure the status quo is maintained and no new ideas will be forthcoming unless some well known name decides that a new idea is needed?
ive noticed that education of guys who i want to date is the first thing that i usually notice about them. so how about you people? do you consider education of your partner as an factor or you are one of those people who even don't know whatever their partner is studying or what his work is .
Hello,i need some info about Physics college education in USA an UK.
In my country there are 2 different Physics directions (colleges), one is educational Physics and the other is scientific Physics. The first one educates Physics professors (primary and high school) and the other one educates...
Step 1: Wear a long scarf year round.
Professor Gerald Lambeau from Good Will Hunting. Look at this dude, he's a math professor at MIT and he's always wearing a long scarf. Indoor, outdoor, summer, winter, a scarf is a necessary accessory for a genius. Some would argue a scarf is more...
I just want to ask what's the situation at your place.
At some places people don't really have the interest for what they study...they just do it for the degree and finally survival; a 'job'...that's about it. So while they are having technical education all they have in mind is passing...as...
I don't think allowing school kids to stay in school for a longer period of time would increase the quality of public education. I think we need to improved and/or completely changed the curriculum in most public schools by created a curriculum that will suit each student's individual interests...
I think this is just crazy. I really don't know what to say about the people that are accusing Obama of "brainwashing" their children by encouraging them to stay in school.

There are several reactions that one can have upon seeing the text Advanced Calculus by Sternberg and Loomis. (Those unfamiliar with this book can find it online here: http://www.math.harvard.edu/~shlomo/)
My reaction was simply to be surprised at the extreme discrepancy between the material...

I have just browsed through some threads and your level seems to be...
How is the math education in NYU (undergrad pure and applied)?? I know they have this courant institute but I want to hear first hand opinions about their math program.
Also, how tough is it to make it to NYU?

Here is my current situation, as a high school drop out, I can continue my education at a so called Adult Education Center. This means I can choose my schedule that best fits my needs.
Here is the thing, should I do only 2 classes a day and try my best to get close to 100% in my classes, or...
I think it would be beneficial to students beginning or getting towards the beginning of their college careers if we shared how bad professors or poor college careers affected our lives. Since I'm only a grad student, i can only share the former.
For example, the professor upper-division...
So the current (and classical) opinion on education is that a well-rounded education is best for students. The definitions of well-rounded are a bit muddly and mean different things to different people, so I was curious; what subjects should a 'well-educated' person know or at least be competent...
I suggest that our hot-house system of education, with its cruel blackmail that children have only 'one chance' to 'succeed', is a major contributing factor to ill health in later life. If a person fails in his final exam at any stage, he may well see himself as a 'failure' in life and turn for...
Roughly how long does it take to become a medical physicist? I'm currently a third-year nuclear engineering student looking at medical physics, and I'm realizing it's a much different setup than in engineering. Is a residency required? I mean a masters would take like 1.5-2 years, which is...
Let me start by giving a bit of background information about myself: I'm 24 in April. I'm a business student. When I first started college, I chose business because I really had no idea what to do and business was the route I took for safety. Flash forward to the present, where I've been in...
Everyone seems to say that experience is more important that education, but they also say that education is the key to success. Employers want experience, but people with MSs and PhDs get paid more than people with BSs. People with BSs get paid more than people with a high school degree, and...
I worked full-time (upto 47hrs/week) while completing my undergraduate degree in Physics (basically to support myself).
On the negative side, I've had to forgo any research experience while focusing all my effort to keep up with my full course load.
On the positive side, I have no student...

Hi,
I'm thinking of attending college online but i have no idea where to start? Does any of you have experience with online distance learning? What should i expect? Is it any good or I should just go to a traditional college.
I thought it might be good to start a thread on journals that educators could use as resources to learn more about current ideas in education research. Well, okay, I thought mostly someone else might be able to offer some pointers toward well-respected journals in the field. We probably all...
I'm to start at Aberdeen, UK, where I have 4 compulsory (basically mechanics, waves, optics +electronics, relativity and quantum mechanics) modules and 4 optional modules. This is basically the only time I can choose modules - the next two years are pretty much set.
Disappointingly, there are...
Extended Adolescence and Higher Education
Virtually all of our political leaders have a college or university education. Many of our political leaders have an Ivy League education which often means six years of higher education; four years getting some kind of undergraduate degree followed...
Hello I am a student from the States and currently studying Undergraduate Degree in EE. I also planned on doing my Masters in EE here also but for some reason I am interested in Double Major in Material Science. The thing is, I just want to learn, everything for the fun of it without breaking...
How to Play 3d Chess with a Checkers Education
Descartes’ legacy to all of us via philosophy can be labeled, I think, as rationalism (discovery of truth through pure reason), dichotomy (mind/body split), and certainty. Even though very few of us know anything about philosophy, almost...
Hi guys,
I wanted to get the input of some people who post on these forums. Maybe some people who are in industry or currently in school.
I'm currently at a university studying Mechanical Engineering. I'm about to enter my final year and only have a few more classes to finish to get my...
I am curious as to when it became customary to require that people obtain a university degree in order to practice an occupation other than teaching.
Isn't it true there was a time when a degree was not required of people wanting to be engineers, for example? I know that some people became...
Hi everyone. I need to decide which way to go with my education soon. My interest are mainly maths, physics and computers.
The thing I could currently see myself work with would be to help create educational software for maths and physics at the level for high school, collage and university...
Give me some tips!
Hey guys,
Can anyone give me some tips for distance learning education, with the help of which I can perform well? I can score good marks in exams. Please give me some tips for it. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
So, here's what I have written down so far:
1) Attend City College of New York. Obtain a CS/EE degree (or as much EE knowledge I can possibly get), maintain a 3.8 GPA, build solid math base.
2) Join MIT's EECS department, begin research into AI/robotics, software development, photonics...
How much does the American public know about or enable energy conservation? It seems to me that by far most effort of this kind is by industry and government.
Has the informational drive to change public consumption through behavior been successful, or is the primary means the pocketbook...

I sometimes glance at the EE forums, but never find anything ineresting. Maybe it's because I don't understand any of it yet?
I love the physics, mainly quantuam forum, which I browse daily, sometimes pulling up 2-3 year old threads, and reading them hours on end, momentarily forgetting...
Im a physics major in my junior year in a fairly small and unknown university. I plan to graduate at the end of winter 2009, and then its off to graduate school. My question is about paying for graduate school. As far as I understand, the majority of physics graduate students do not pay for...

So, I did my research when choosing schools to the best of my ability. I picked a school that was listed in the top 50 schools. I visited the school a few times, talked to some students, researched online, and in publications, and decided.
Well, I have been here a few quarters, and I am...
First let me say that I couldn't decide on the best forum for this, so if any other staff members feel that this belongs elsewhere, please feel free to move it without objections.
I have observed that because of the internet, ideas once reserved for only advanced students or graduates are...

This may be an very bad over generalization. But, has anyone noticed that say a mathematics education major is pretty bad at math compared to the typical mathematics major. I have few questions about this
(1) If the above is true, what is the necessity of having a education degree or a...
I have seen that we always have intense curiosity but education kills it by forcing information on us. It makes us tension freaks. There are a thousand ways I can think of to make the education better but why aren't they applied? They are so basic that I don't see why anyone would have a...
Hey,
I'm interested in Distance Education, specifically for Linear Algebra. I know about the standard EPGY, and JHU, etc. I know there must be better, or at least other options out there and I was wondering if anyone has experience with them. Also is Linear algebra a course you can take...
Hi,

When people speak about getting an education, I think of science, maths, logic as the key foundations to an education. However there are many who supposeddly have an education but may not have done any science beyond year 10 and are very ignorant about maths. Should these people be labeled as...
