A book is a medium for recording information in the form of writing or images, typically composed of many pages (made of papyrus, parchment, vellum, or paper) bound together and protected by a cover. The technical term for this physical arrangement is codex (plural, codices). In the history of hand-held physical supports for extended written compositions or records, the codex replaces its predecessor, the scroll. A single sheet in a codex is a leaf and each side of a leaf is a page.
As an intellectual object, a book is prototypically a composition of such great length that it takes a considerable investment of time to compose and still considered as an investment of time to read. In a restricted sense, a book is a self-sufficient section or part of a longer composition, a usage that reflects the fact that, in antiquity, long works had to be written on several scrolls and each scroll had to be identified by the book it contained. Each part of Aristotle's Physics is called a book. In an unrestricted sense, a book is the compositional whole of which such sections, whether called books or chapters or parts, are parts.
The intellectual content in a physical book need not be a composition, nor even be called a book. Books can consist only of drawings, engravings or photographs, crossword puzzles or cut-out dolls. In a physical book, the pages can be left blank or can feature an abstract set of lines to support entries, such as in an account book, an appointment book, an autograph book, a notebook, a diary or a sketchbook. Some physical books are made with pages thick and sturdy enough to support other physical objects, like a scrapbook or photograph album. Books may be distributed in electronic form as ebooks and other formats.
Although in ordinary academic parlance a monograph is understood to be a specialist academic work, rather than a reference work on a scholarly subject, in library and information science monograph denotes more broadly any non-serial publication complete in one volume (book) or a finite number of volumes (even a novel like Proust's seven-volume In Search of Lost Time), in contrast to serial publications like a magazine, journal or newspaper. An avid reader or collector of books is a bibliophile or colloquially, "bookworm". A place where books are traded is a bookshop or bookstore. Books are also sold elsewhere and can be borrowed from libraries. Google has estimated that by 2010, approximately 130,000,000 titles had been published. In some wealthier nations, the sale of printed books has decreased because of the increased usage of ebooks.
Well I always used to like books which explain stuff on examples and that are well illustrated,drawn.So I ask,could you tell me what are some science books with lots of pictures drawings,diagrams,etc...?Btw not searching for books which are for kids,I am a college student but just don't want too...
Hi everyone, I just bought Physics for Scientists and Engineers 8th ed by serway and jewett, is it a good textbook for calculus based physics since I'm a student of physics at university ?

I've just finished an elementary analysis course using Spivak's Calculus. I did get an A in the course but only because the professor was often very generous with the grading. The course I am in currently is using Folland's Advanced Calculus text.
At the same time I have also been studying...
Hi, everyone. Don’t know how to solve (x^2-1)y"+xy'-y=0
Which books are nice discussing about this kind of differential equations?
Many many thanks
A1. y\prime=\frac{4x^2}{y}+\frac{y}{x}
Ans: y=2x \sqrt{2x+3}
A2. y\prime=\frac{2y}{x}-\frac{x^4}{2y}
Ans: y=x^2 \sqrt{1-x}...
Hey!
Happy New Year 2013 to all of you!
I am in good mood for learning something new so I need advice.

Hello Guys,
I am new to this forum, but have recently fallen in love with physics and maths.
I am an international baccalaureate student, who studies maths, and was wondering whether any of you could suggest any books to help with a certain kind of problem.
At the end of our papers...
Lately, I realized that I've grown tired of calculations and want to venture into more theory type books although I haven't taken any proof based math classes yet. I feel confident that I can do basic proofs, i.e. the "show that" type problems but nothing too crazy after that. I've read through...
Hi ! I've been reading on here for a long time through google and decided to join !
I started learning physics material mostly through general layman books from Hawking,Greene,Asimov etc and while I do not aim to become a physicist in occupation (luckily for physics), I do want to progress to...
Here is some of mine... I wish you'll give me yours.

So I've decided to start off with Calculus and I've heard a lot about Spivaks and Apostols Calculus.. WHat I wanted to know was that if it's appropriate for a newbie? If not what books would you suggest a beginner to start off with ( I don't mind rigor as I look forward to challenges and...
Hello, could someone recommend a good book on tensor calculus? I'd like it to be relatively modern (I have an old book) and maybe contain some examples drawn from physics. Chapters on related subjects such as differential forms and calculus of variations would be a plus.
Cheers.

I am trying to improve my problem solving skills. I am an engineer and I have a PhD in EE. All through, the only thing I have done is to solve problems. I am familiar with most of the things mentioned in Polya's book.
I am interested in being able to solve the very hard problems that usually...
Recently I was reminded of a series of textbooks by Arnold Sommerfeld. When I was a young man, these were obligatory offerings at any respectable bookstore. I never purchased them because I had other things on my plate. Now I cannot seem to find them in print.
I did find this assessment...
I have read many threads concerning many excellent books on calculus but not for analytical geometry. I can't seem to find any thread about good references for analytical geometry. I am taking the course analytical geometry and calculus in college and I need good book in both fields. I have...
I'm looking for some good quality books on experimental methods, instruments, and measurements for graduate level. Do you guys have any recommendations?
Hi,
I am a graduate student with a background more oriented in high energy physics and cosmology but switching to light and matter interaction, more specifically cavity QED and quantum optics. I need to have a working knowledge on those topics, being able to read state of the art articles and...

I'll be honest here. I recently graduated with an undergrad degree in Mechanical Engineering (top marks, too), but I'm having some doubts about it as a career path and part of me misses the fun of pure Physics. Anyway, I'll be pursuing engineering for now, but on the side I'd like to read up...
Hi,
I'm doing my first year in mathematics and physics. I heard (I think it was Mathwonk), that it ofter helps to read 'the masters' instead of the pupils, meaning it benefits to read Gauss, Newton, Euclid.
Can I start with this, or is it too early? I was thinking of buying three monumental...
