What are the benefits of cross-disciplinary learning in engineering?

Majored HR in college, but did nothing about it yet. To work properly, learned to use SOLIDWORKS and bit UNIGRAPHICS, to work better, started learning mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, going to be 40 old now, bit difficult, but get to proceed...appreciate your help very much in advance!
