How much zinc sulfide is produced?

In summary, the question is asking how much zinc sulfide is produced when 5.0 g of Zn is heated with an equal amount of S. The law of constant composition states that the elemental composition of a pure compound is always the same. To solve this problem, a balanced chemical equation is needed. The equation is Zn + S → ZnS. The masses of the reactants do not affect the equation. To find the amount of product produced, the grams of each reactant can be converted to moles.

5.0 g of Zn is heated with an equal amount of S, bow much zinc sulfide is produced?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

Wouldn't there be an equation to solve this problem? I know law of constant composition is an observation that the elemental composition of a pure compound is always the same.

By equation do you mean a chemical equation?

You have 5.0 g of Zn and 5.0 g of S, you need to find out which is the limiting reagent.

Okay, then do you have to do a balanced chemical equation?

  • #4
I would start with that first.

5 Zn --> 5 S

Do you mean something like this? I really do appreciate this alot, thanks for your help

Zn and S are the reactants, so they go on the left side.

Zn + S → ZnS
(now you know what the equation is)

The masses of the reactants don't have a part in the equation itself at all.

ok thanks a lot for this

Do you know how to convert grams of a substance to moles? I would first start changing all the grams to moles.

Related to How much zinc sulfide is produced?

1. How is zinc sulfide produced?

Zinc sulfide is typically produced through a chemical reaction between zinc oxide and hydrogen sulfide gas. This process is known as the "wet process" and is widely used in industry.

2. How much zinc sulfide can be produced from a given amount of zinc oxide?

The amount of zinc sulfide produced depends on the molar ratio of zinc oxide to hydrogen sulfide gas. In theory, for every one mole of zinc oxide, one mole of zinc sulfide can be produced. However, factors such as temperature, pressure, and impurities can affect the actual yield.

3. What is the yield of zinc sulfide production?

The yield of zinc sulfide production refers to the amount of zinc sulfide that is obtained from the reaction compared to the theoretical maximum amount. This yield can vary depending on the conditions of the reaction and the quality of the starting materials.

4. What are the uses of zinc sulfide?

Zinc sulfide has many industrial applications, including as a pigment in paints, a luminescent material in fluorescent lights, and a filler in rubber and plastics. It is also used in the production of semiconductors and as a catalyst in chemical reactions.

5. Are there any environmental concerns regarding zinc sulfide production?

Zinc sulfide production can result in the release of hazardous chemicals and waste products, which can be harmful to the environment if not properly managed. However, there are regulations and protocols in place to mitigate these risks and ensure safe production and disposal of zinc sulfide.
