What is Ideal gas laws: Definition and 19 Discussions

The ideal gas law, also called the general gas equation, is the equation of state of a hypothetical ideal gas. It is a good approximation of the behavior of many gases under many conditions, although it has several limitations. It was first stated by Benoît Paul Émile Clapeyron in 1834 as a combination of the empirical Boyle's law, Charles's law, Avogadro's law, and Gay-Lussac's law. The ideal gas law is often written in an empirical form:

P
V
=
n
R
T

{\displaystyle PV=nRT}
where

P

{\displaystyle P}
,

V

{\displaystyle V}
and

T

{\displaystyle T}
are the pressure, volume and temperature;

n

{\displaystyle n}
is the amount of substance; and

R

{\displaystyle R}
is the ideal gas constant. It is the same for all gases.
It can also be derived from the microscopic kinetic theory, as was achieved (apparently independently) by August Krönig in 1856 and Rudolf Clausius in 1857.

    What Is the Highest Temperature Reached in the Ideal Gas Cycle?

    Question (see attached diagram): PV diagram with 7.5 moles of ideal diatomic gas through cycle a, b and c. What is the highest temperature reached by the gas during the cycle? (multiple choice answers 180, 325, 208 and 100 C, i know answer is 208 C but I'm not getting it!) It is a PV diagram...

    Does Increasing Molecules in a Constant Temperature Container Affect Pressure?

    Ideal Gas Law Equilibrium Requirements

    It is well known that the ideal gas law applies only to an ideal gas, one consisting of particles infinitesimal in size and exhibits no interactions between the particles. Considering an ideal gas, is the ideal gas law valid under non-equilibrium conditions? For example, does the ideal gas law...

    Some help on Compressed Air Energy Storage

    I was reading this article about different types of energy storage, and it gave this formula for compressed air. Joules = P0V0ln(P/P0) Where P0 = Atmospheric pressure 105 Pa V0 = Volume of air to be compressed in m3. P = Pressure in tank when compressed in Pa. Note: This formula is for...

    Should diatomic gas be regarded as ideal gas?

    We know that one model for ideal gas is monoatomic gas with no attractive force between atoms, elastic collision and some other assumptions. I would like to ask if there exist a gas behave exactly the same but the only difference is it's a diatomic gas (or more complicated structure), should it...

    Confused about Boyle's Law, Charles' Law and the pressure Law?

    In my textbook, it says that pV=C (Boyle's Law), V/T=C (Charle's Law) and that P/T=C (pressure Law). The problem is that I cannot see how the first two equations combine to give the last one. If I divide the first equation by the second, I get that pT=C, which certainly is not the same as the...

    Solving a Buoyancy Question Involving Air & Water
