Science (from the Latin word scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. The earliest roots of science can be traced to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia in around 3000 to 1200 BCE. Their contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and medicine entered and shaped Greek natural philosophy of classical antiquity, whereby formal attempts were made to provide explanations of events in the physical world based on natural causes. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, knowledge of Greek conceptions of the world deteriorated in Western Europe during the early centuries (400 to 1000 CE) of the Middle Ages, but was preserved in the Muslim world during the Islamic Golden Age. The recovery and assimilation of Greek works and Islamic inquiries into Western Europe from the 10th to 13th century revived "natural philosophy", which was later transformed by the Scientific Revolution that began in the 16th century as new ideas and discoveries departed from previous Greek conceptions and traditions. The scientific method soon played a greater role in knowledge creation and it was not until the 19th century that many of the institutional and professional features of science began to take shape; along with the changing of "natural philosophy" to "natural science."Modern science is typically divided into three major branches that consist of the natural sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, and physics), which study nature in the broadest sense; the social sciences (e.g., economics, psychology, and sociology), which study individuals and societies; and the formal sciences (e.g., logic, mathematics, and theoretical computer science), which deal with symbols governed by rules. There is disagreement, however, on whether the formal sciences actually constitute a science as they do not rely on empirical evidence. Disciplines that use existing scientific knowledge for practical purposes, such as engineering and medicine, are described as applied sciences.New knowledge in science is advanced by research from scientists who are motivated by curiosity about the world and a desire to solve problems. Contemporary scientific research is highly collaborative and is usually done by teams in academic and research institutions, government agencies, and companies. The practical impact of their work has led to the emergence of science policies that seek to influence the scientific enterprise by prioritizing the development of commercial products, armaments, health care, public infrastructure, and environmental protection.
I've been hearing of many athletes coming forward to donate their brains to science when they die. Curious with most of us being involved in science and its progress has anyone here made plans to donate their body or an organ to science after they die? Why not? Let's do it!
Hi,
just came across a video on CNN showing how to make water behave like it would in space:

My question about that video is:
what height do i need to get a free fall time of 10 sec?
best regards

I am posting this here instead of "Science and math textbooks" because I am looking for suggestions on an easy reading but educational book, not a workbook.
I am by no means an expert, but I have a solid backgound in math and physics from college (Engineering), as well as self-study with...
I am not an expert in the field, but intuitively I think that a resume with both math and computer science has a lot of impact. I also think that math can help me understand computer science better. Next quarter, I am planning to take classical geometry, so I am just wondering if this class...
Hello!
My hobbies are tinkering on my computer and mathematics.
Physics is not bad but I do not love it like I do mathematics.
I like the logic and analytical skills that it requires. I like solving problems.
I recently dropped out of Aeronautical Engineering because I simply did not like over...
My friend is a 7th grade teacher and has asked for help finding resources she can share with her students. Web sites, videos, books, etc. appropriate for a Jr High/middle school level.

This is an article I just found out about. It deals with computer science on about half of it, but the most interesting discussions concern educational values. Here is the article:

Greetings Forum Members,
I am quite new to this & this is my first post. To tell you guys a little bit about me I am a magician that creates effects and I figured that when I am stuck I should go somewhere and ask people that are smarter than me :-).
First Question: Is there any kind of...
I normally would have put this in the grad school section, but the question is more pertinent to choosing a career path.
So basically at one point in time I was in a graduate program. I left pretty early due to funding issues as well as some personal issues that I needed to resolve. I ended up...

I'm interested in studying the Earth.
Its our human impact that is effecting the species, and ourselves. The way things are heading, its more extinction of animal species and ourselves.

Thank you for opening my first thread.
I have just began studying Physics at a university in Hungary and would like to get some information about Network Science and Plasma Phyics/Nuclear Fusion. I am looking for a branche in Physics in which I can do research in the coming years and get a job...
First off, let me start by saying this isn't a thread asking about career prospects or salary prospects or anything like that. I've finally reached a point in my life where I know I want to pursue physics, and I'm extremely thrilled by the idea of Planetary Science. Nor do I have a romanticized...
I'm in search for a career that is 'earth' related. I also have interests in the ocean. So, my choices come down to;
Earth Sciences & Marine Biology / Oceanography.
Was looking for a career in the space industry, or renewable energy, but found most of it to be engineering based. And I don't...

Sergey_KGB recently posted on the particle physics forum. He wanted to avoid political discussion and focus on the technical issues of the Alexander Litvinenko assassination.
I'm more interested in the political/social aspects of the use of science and technology to kill human beings and steal...

Hi! Thank you for reading and (hopefully) responding. I am really desperate right now. For my science fair project, I need to build something that works or does a task. Last year my friends built a linear accelerator and someone else built a potato gun. These are things that work. I desperately...
Hello Everybody!
At this point of my life, I'm facing a dilemma which might seem a bit unconventional, or even strange: Should I apply to Data Science Master's programs or Physics Master's programs? I'm in a state of constant confusion and can't make my mind to pick one of these paths. Any...
I'm posting this one in Relativity as a couple dozen of you gave excellent considerate answers in my other E=mc2 posts, so I'm hoping to get your personal opinion on Pop Science for curious kids and adults.
From your posts I'd say most of you (probably all teachers) have been very patient...
Right now I am a sophomore studying to be a computer science major. As of now I am wanting to go to grad school to get a masters. I was curious though if computer science was the only thing I could get a masters in though. Such as would it be possible to get a masters in computer engineering...

Why do we have the number zero? What makes it important? Can we create math like system that don't use zero but are nonetheless useful. What limits or biases does having or not having zero create when we do science?

I like science in part because I thought religion is irrelevant to science. Science is at its basis simply exploration married to intelligent analysis. When I read about quantum physics interpretations I hear about proponents (followers) of these different interpretations.
What is religion...

For a person who like to go forward in the Computer Field, what is the best to choose in higher education? Computer Science or Engineering(Software/Hardware/Network .etc)?
{And also what are the differences regarding the economical benefits related to Computer Science and Computer Engineering?}
I wasn't sure where to post this, but I figured this would be a topic under General Physics. I am aware that the next generation of observations, ranging from cosmological observations to post-LHC particle physics experiments, will produce overwhelmingly large and complex datasets, far larger...
I am doing some experimentation, for a science fair. And I want to make sure I the laser pointer I use is Class I (conceivably, I may change that, but any class of laser can be used to replicate results similar to the double slit experiment correct?). Can anyone direct me as to where I may be...
