Why Is My 3-Phase Generator Voltage Clipping and Distorting?

In summary, generator voltage clipping is when the output voltage of a generator exceeds its maximum rated voltage, resulting in a distorted waveform. This can be caused by overloading, improper voltage regulator settings, or faulty equipment. The effects can include overheating, equipment damage, and reduced efficiency, and prevention methods include proper sizing and maintenance, as well as avoiding overloading and using high-quality equipment. If experiencing voltage clipping, it's important to shut off the generator and inspect for issues, and consult a professional for repairs if necessary.

I have a 600v 3 phase generator that will not put out a stable voltage. When looking at the sine wave through a scope meter I see phase “B” and “C” are clipping at 690v, Phase A is still a sine wave but with some cross over distortion. Phase “A” peak is 840v. Any Ideas?

Welcome to PF! Is this a diesel powered 3 phase alternator?

is it connected to a load?

has it been recently worked on?

does it smell of hot insulation?

Related to Why Is My 3-Phase Generator Voltage Clipping and Distorting?

1. What is generator voltage clipping?

Generator voltage clipping is a phenomenon that occurs when the output voltage of a generator exceeds its maximum rated voltage, resulting in a distorted output waveform.

2. What causes generator voltage clipping?

Generator voltage clipping can be caused by a variety of factors, such as overloading the generator, improper voltage regulator settings, or faulty equipment. It can also occur when the generator is connected to a load that requires more power than the generator is capable of producing.

3. What are the effects of generator voltage clipping?

The effects of generator voltage clipping can vary depending on the severity, but commonly include overheating, damage to electrical equipment, and reduced efficiency of the generator. In extreme cases, it can even lead to a complete shutdown of the generator.

4. How can I prevent generator voltage clipping?

To prevent generator voltage clipping, it is important to properly size the generator for the intended load, regularly maintain and inspect the generator and its components, and ensure that the voltage regulator is properly calibrated. Additionally, avoiding overloading the generator and using high-quality equipment can also help prevent voltage clipping.

5. What should I do if I experience generator voltage clipping?

If you experience generator voltage clipping, it is important to immediately shut off the generator and inspect it for any potential issues. If the generator is not damaged, check the voltage regulator settings and reduce the load on the generator if necessary. If the generator is damaged, it is best to consult a professional for repairs or replacement.
