Tips for Structuring a Theoretical Project in an MPhys Course

In summary, a third year student in an MPhys course is seeking advice on a project they are doing for their physics course. The project is worth 20 credits and they are looking for guidance on the structure of the final report and how to present researched information. They are also open to receiving help through MSN contacts. A previous third year student shares their experience of a similar project and suggests focusing on rehashing papers and filling in gaps with calculations. The student is reminded that this is not their final year project and may have to do another project next year.

Hey guys.

I am new to this forum, and being a 3rd year student in an MPhys course I am slightly irate that I hadn't registered this forum before, or any other physics forums for that matter. Hence the username.

That said, I need all the advice I can get regarding a project I am doing for my 3rd year physics course.

Ok, let me explain: I am doing the MPhys course, so its not my final year, therefore my project is only worth half the credits (20 credits rather than 40) than people who are on the BSc course (because its their final year project).

The question is: Are there any UK forum members who could tell me the structure of the final report and also give me advice. For a theoretical project, do they expect a lot of research, derivations etc. and how do I present researched information?
I know these are such newbie questions but I haven't done a theoretical project before.

Would be nice if I could get a few contacts on MSN to help me out with these things.

Thank you for reading.

The project I did in my third year was pretty short: probably only about 30 pages. There wasn't too much research in there, just rehashing of a couple of papers I'd read, and a calculation or two filling in the gaps that papers notoriously leave. I'm guessing that this isn't your final year project, but that you have to do another project next year, right?

I'm not sure what other advice you're after. Do you have a project title, and suggested background material?

I understand the importance of seeking advice and guidance when it comes to research projects. It is always beneficial to reach out to others for support and insights. In regards to your project, it is important to first have a clear understanding of the objectives and expectations set by your course. This will help guide your research and presentation.

In terms of the final report, it is important to structure it in a clear and organized manner. This may include an introduction to the topic, a literature review of previous research, your methodology, results, and conclusions. It may also be helpful to include any important derivations or equations you have used in your theoretical project.

When presenting researched information, it is important to properly cite your sources and provide references. This shows that you have thoroughly researched the topic and have a strong understanding of the existing literature.

I would also recommend reaching out to your course instructor or a supervisor for further guidance and advice. They can provide specific information and expectations for your project.

Overall, it is important to stay organized, thorough, and seek guidance when needed. Best of luck with your project.
