What is Meter: Definition and 309 Discussions

The metre (Commonwealth spelling) or meter (American spelling; see spelling differences) (from the French unit mètre, from the Greek noun μέτρον, "measure", and cognate with Sanskrit mita, meaning "measured") is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). The SI unit symbol is m.
The metre is currently defined as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299 792 458 of a second.
The metre was originally defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's circumference is approximately 40000 km. In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. The current definition was adopted in 1983 and modified slightly in 2002 to clarify that the metre is a measure of proper length.

What is the mass of the meter stick?

A meter stick blances horizontally on a knife-edge at the 50.0 cm mark. With two 5.00 g coins stacked over the 12.0 cm mark, the stick is found to balance at the 45.5 cm mark. What is the mass of the meter stick? I know it is going to be having equal torques. The torque on one side should be...

Ant crawls on a meter strick with acceleration

I have a question ..an ant crawls on a meter strick with acceleration a(t)=t-1/2t^2. After t seconds the ants intiial velocity is 2cm/s. The ants initial poistion is the 50cm mark. So ten \int_{a}^{b}f(t)dt and v(t)=1/2t^2-1/6t^3+c and because v(0)=2m/s the equation is...

How do i build a diesel injection pulse meter or adaptor ?

Can anyone help me attempt such a project? I basically need to be able to sense the injection pulse in the injector pipe (1/4 inch / 6mm dia.) and convert it to an electrical pulse so that a normal ignition timing light (strobe light) can read the input as it would on a petrol/spark ignition...

Can Movement Occur in a Universe with Unquantized Distance?

An ancient greek philosopher, an ancient greek hero, and Shrodenger's cat walk into a bar. Ok, forget the cat. The philosopher gets so drunk that he decides to prove to the hero that he can't reach the finish line of a 100 meter dash because he would have to go half the remaining distance an...

OHM's Law Lab: Proper Meter Placement

OHM's Law Lab this lab involved a voltmeter and an ammeter...a voltage source was turned on and sent to a resistor, from the resistor there was a current probe and a voltage probe...the idea of the lab was to give 6 readings for a resistor, each reading would exceed by .5v intervals...during...

Calculating String Tensions in a Hanging Meter Stick

A meter stick (L = 1 m) with mass M = 0.409 kg is supported by two strings, one at the 0 cm mark and the other at the 90 cm mark. a) What is the tension in the string at 0 cm? b) What is the tension in the string at 90 cm? c) Now the string at 0 cm is cut. What is the tension in the...

What is the definition of 1 meter?

What is the defination of 1 meter? My physics teacher told me it's related to the frequency of a certain EM wave, but he couldn't remember the whole story. Perhaps it also explains why the speed of light is 299792458 m/s, which is an integer.
