The subject of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics is "for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics". The Nobel Committee recognized three scientists - Arthur Ashkin, Gérard Mourou, and Donna Strickland - for their contributions to the development of laser technology.
Arthur Ashkin developed the optical tweezers technique, which uses laser beams to manipulate tiny particles and biological cells. This groundbreaking invention allowed for precise control and manipulation of microscopic objects, leading to advancements in various fields such as biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology.
The Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) technique is a method for creating high-intensity, ultra-short laser pulses. This technique, developed by Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland, revolutionized laser technology, making it possible to generate extremely short and powerful laser pulses that are used in a wide range of applications, including medical procedures, material processing, and scientific research.
The inventions and techniques developed by Ashkin, Mourou, and Strickland have had a significant impact on society. Their contributions to laser physics have led to advancements in medical procedures, communication technology, and materials science. For example, optical tweezers have been used to study and manipulate biological cells, while CPA has enabled the development of high-power lasers used in surgical procedures and in the production of computer chips.
This Nobel Prize serves as recognition of the importance and potential of laser physics in shaping our world. The groundbreaking work of the laureates has paved the way for further advancements in this field, and their discoveries will continue to impact and improve various industries and technologies in the future.
