I am writing an essay on determinism, i was just wondering what peoples opinions on it are, my argument is going to be that it is possible, but i would like to include other peoples opinions and reasons.

Thanks Steph.

as opposed to what?

is this about freewill?

  • #3
yeah, basically do you believe that our path in life is already chosen.

if the world isn't deterministic then how could anyone ever be held responsible for anything?

But at the same time something must help us make our desicsions, possibly the chemicals in our body and if that's the case, our chemicals don't change therefore our choices are already made.

Related to What Do Others Think About Determinism?

1. What is determinism?

Determinism is the philosophical belief that all events, including human actions, are ultimately determined by previous causes and cannot be altered or changed. Essentially, everything that happens in the universe is the result of a chain of cause and effect, making it predetermined and inevitable.

2. How does determinism relate to free will?

Determinism and free will are often seen as opposing concepts. If determinism is true, then it would mean that our choices and actions are not truly free, as they are already determined by previous causes. However, some philosophers argue that determinism and free will can coexist, as our choices are still made by our own desires and beliefs, even if they are determined by external factors.

3. What evidence supports or refutes determinism?

There is no definitive evidence for or against determinism. Some argue that scientific principles, such as the laws of physics, suggest a deterministic universe. On the other hand, quantum mechanics introduces the concept of randomness and uncertainty, which challenges determinism. Ultimately, the debate on determinism remains a philosophical one, with no clear answer.

4. How does determinism impact our sense of morality?

Determinism raises questions about moral responsibility and accountability. If our actions are predetermined, can we truly be held accountable for them? This has implications on the justice system and our understanding of right and wrong. However, others argue that even if our actions are determined, our moral values and beliefs still guide our decisions and shape our character.

5. Can determinism be proven or disproven?

As determinism is a philosophical concept, it cannot be proven or disproven with scientific methods. It is a matter of belief and interpretation. Some argue that determinism is a logical and rational explanation for the universe, while others see it as limiting and incompatible with our human experience. Ultimately, whether determinism is true or not may never be definitively known.
