What causes stars to appear to zigzag in the night sky?

In summary, stars appear to zigzag in the night sky due to the Earth's rotation and the effects of atmospheric turbulence. This causes the light from stars to be distorted and appear to twinkle or zigzag. Additionally, the Earth's atmosphere can also create a mirage effect, further contributing to the illusion of stars zigzagging in the night sky. However, this phenomenon is not actually caused by the stars themselves, but rather by the Earth's own movement and atmospheric conditions.
