Vector Algebra (line perpendicular to plane)

In summary, a vector in algebra is an arrow that represents magnitude and direction, commonly denoted by boldface letters. To determine if a line is perpendicular to a plane, the dot product of their respective direction and normal vectors can be calculated. A line can be perpendicular to multiple planes if its direction vector is parallel to their normal vectors. To find the point of intersection between a line and a plane, a system of equations can be set up and solved. Vector algebra is used in various real-world applications such as physics, engineering, and computer graphics. It helps model and analyze physical phenomena, design structures and systems, and create 3D graphics.

Homework Statement

Find the parametric equations for the line which passes through the point (3,5,7)
and parallel to the vector <2,6,8>. Is the line perpendicular to the plane 5x + 6y +7z = 10?

Homework Equations

line equation, r = Ro + tV

The Attempt at a Solution

line equation, r = Ro + tV
-------------> = <3,5,7> + t<2,6,8>

hence, x = 3 + 2t ; y = 5 + 6t ; z = 7 + 8t

the problem is.. how am i going to prove that the line perpendicular
to the plane 5x + 6y +7z = 10 or not..?

Related to Vector Algebra (line perpendicular to plane)

1. What is a vector in algebra?

A vector in algebra is a mathematical object that represents magnitude and direction. It is commonly represented as an arrow pointing in a specific direction. In vector algebra, vectors are typically denoted by boldface letters such as v or a.

2. How do you determine if a line is perpendicular to a plane?

A line is perpendicular to a plane if it is at a 90-degree angle to the plane. This can be determined by calculating the dot product of the line's direction vector and the plane's normal vector. If the dot product is equal to 0, the line is perpendicular to the plane.

3. Can a line be perpendicular to multiple planes?

Yes, a line can be perpendicular to multiple planes. This happens when the direction vector of the line is parallel to the normal vectors of each plane. In this case, the dot product of the direction vector and each normal vector will be equal to 0, indicating perpendicularity.

4. How do you find the point of intersection between a line and a plane?

To find the point of intersection between a line and a plane, you can set up a system of equations using the parametric equations of the line and the Cartesian equation of the plane. Solve for the values of the parameters that satisfy both equations, and substitute them back into the parametric equations to find the coordinates of the point of intersection.

5. How is vector algebra used in real-world applications?

Vector algebra has many applications in the real world, such as in physics, engineering, and computer graphics. It is used to model and analyze physical phenomena, to design structures and systems, and to create realistic 3D graphics. Some common examples include calculating forces and velocities in mechanics, determining electric and magnetic fields in electromagnetism, and generating computer-generated images in video games and movies.
