Stuck with this non-trivial algebra, solving for x

In summary: Maybe there isn't a simpler expression. Not all simple-looking problems have simple-looking solutions. Anyway, I get a different answer.A useful habit is to check whether a simple solution to the one expression is also a solution to the other. In this case, the simplified solution does not appear to be a solution of the original.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I tried solving it like a quadratic equation.
This is the most simplified I could get it.

Can someone please help me find a simpler expression

A useful habit is to check whether a simple solution to the one expression is also a solution to the other. Your original has the solution x=a=c. That does not appear to be a solution of your final expression.

Third step, shouldn't it be ##\frac{c^2m^2}{b^2}## instead of ##c^2m^2##?

I would have multiplied through the first equation by ##a^2b^2## to get rid of the fractions.

Did you read post #4? You can make further use of this by plugging in the simple solution at various points in your working to see at what point it ceases to be a solution.

Related to Stuck with this non-trivial algebra, solving for x

1. Why is algebra important in science?

Algebra is used in science to represent and analyze complex relationships between different variables. It allows scientists to make predictions and draw conclusions based on data and equations.

2. What is a non-trivial algebraic problem?

A non-trivial algebraic problem is one that cannot be easily solved using basic algebraic rules and requires more advanced techniques such as factoring, substitution, or the quadratic formula.

3. How do you approach solving for x in a non-trivial algebraic equation?

First, simplify the equation by combining like terms and using basic algebraic rules. Then, use more advanced techniques such as factoring or substitution to isolate the variable and solve for x.

4. Can you provide an example of solving for x in a non-trivial algebraic equation?

Sure, for example, in the equation 2x^2 + 5x - 3 = 0, we can use the quadratic formula to solve for x, which gives us two solutions: x = 0.5 or x = -3.

5. How can improving algebra skills benefit a scientist?

Having a strong foundation in algebra allows scientists to better understand and analyze data, make accurate predictions, and solve complex problems in their field of study. It also helps with critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential in the scientific process.
