Solid state physics - FFC structure of NaCl

In summary, the FFC (face-centered cubic) structure of NaCl (sodium chloride) is a crystal lattice arrangement with atoms at the corners and in the center of each face. It is known for its high melting and boiling points, hardness, and brittleness, and is a good conductor of electricity in the liquid state. The structure is formed by strong electrostatic attraction between positively charged sodium ions and negatively charged chloride ions. It has various industrial applications and is commonly used in solid state physics research. The FFC structure of NaCl differs from other crystal lattice structures in its higher coordination number and melting and boiling point.

Homework Statement

NaCl is a face-centred cubic with a basis at Na(0,0,0) and Cl at (a/2,a/2,a/2) and lattice parameter a = 5.63 angstrom. calculate the separation between nearesr neighbours (Na and Cl).

The Attempt at a Solution

Just by looking at the NaCl structure the separation between nearesr neighbours looks like a/2, but I don't know how to explain the answer?

in fcc structure you have an atom at (x,y,z) and also at (1/2,1/2,0)+, (0,1/2,1/2)+, (1/2,0,1/2)+, that gives a/sqrt(2)

Related to Solid state physics - FFC structure of NaCl

1. What is the FFC structure of NaCl?

The FFC (face-centered cubic) structure of NaCl (sodium chloride) is a crystal lattice arrangement in which each unit cell has atoms at the corners and in the center of each face. This results in a cubic shape with an atom at each corner and a smaller atom at the center of each face.

2. What are the properties of the FFC structure of NaCl?

The FFC structure of NaCl is known for its high melting and boiling points, as well as its hardness and brittleness. It is also a good conductor of electricity in the liquid state, but not in the solid state.

3. How does the FFC structure of NaCl form?

The FFC structure of NaCl forms due to the strong electrostatic attraction between the positively charged sodium ions and the negatively charged chloride ions. This results in a stable lattice structure with a high coordination number.

4. What are the applications of the FFC structure of NaCl?

The FFC structure of NaCl has many industrial applications, such as in the production of bleach, soap, and paper. It is also commonly used as a de-icing agent and in water softeners. In addition, the FFC structure of NaCl is a common model system in solid state physics research.

5. How does the FFC structure of NaCl differ from other crystal lattice structures?

The FFC structure of NaCl differs from other crystal lattice structures in that it has a higher coordination number, resulting in a more tightly packed structure. It also has a higher melting and boiling point compared to other structures, such as the BCC (body-centered cubic) or HCP (hexagonal close-packed) structures.
