Simple mechanism design software

In summary, the conversation discusses the need for a free or inexpensive software for simulating and analyzing simple mechanisms, including linkages and joints. The person mentions Artas' SAM as a possible option, but it is costly. They also mention Working Model 2D as a potential option, with a student license available for $29.99. Another suggestion is to check PTC's website, as they have previously offered free or evaluation versions of their software with simulation capabilities. Several other free CAD software options are also mentioned, such as Creo Elements, FreeCAD, HeeksCAD, and CADemia.

Hey, I just started a course in mechanism design this semester and I was wondering if there was a free/inexpensive piece of software that would allow me to simulate/analyze simple mechanisms including linkages, joints, and such. Perhaps there might also be some sort of java applet on the web that does this as well?

As an example, Artas' SAM seems to do just this (http://www.artas.nl/), but it costs up,to a few thousand dollars.

Thanks in advance!

I remember PTC once offering free/evaluation versions of some of their software, and it included simulation capabilities. You might try their website -- http://www.ptc.com

Related to Simple mechanism design software

What is simple mechanism design software?

Simple mechanism design software is a computer program that allows users to design and simulate mechanical systems. It is typically used by engineers and designers to create and test different types of mechanisms, such as gears, linkages, and pulleys.

What are the benefits of using simple mechanism design software?

Using simple mechanism design software can save time and reduce errors in the design process. It also allows for quick and easy modifications to the design, and can provide visualizations and simulations to aid in understanding how the mechanism will function.

What are some common features of simple mechanism design software?

Some common features of simple mechanism design software include the ability to create and edit 2D and 3D designs, simulate motion and forces within the mechanism, generate technical drawings and specifications, and export designs for manufacturing.

What types of industries use simple mechanism design software?

Simple mechanism design software is used in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, robotics, and manufacturing. It is also commonly used in educational settings to teach principles of mechanical design and engineering.

Are there any free or open-source options for simple mechanism design software?

Yes, there are several free and open-source options for simple mechanism design software, such as FreeCAD, SketchUp, and OpenSCAD. These programs may have limited features compared to paid software, but can still be useful for basic design and simulation purposes.
