Related Rates: Helicopter Distance and Direction

In summary, we have two helicopters traveling at different speeds and times, with one taking off at 10:48am and the other planning to land at 10:59am. The question asks for the rate of change of the distance between them at 10:50am and whether it is increasing or decreasing.

Homework Statement

A helicopter takes off from a landing pad at 10:48am and travels eastward at a speed of 120km/h. A second helicopter traveling south at 150km/h is planning to land at 10:59am,

How fast is the distance between them chaging at 10:50am and is the distnace between them increasing or decreasing at this instant...

sooo how about the problem? or is that your nice way of saying it's completely wrong?

Related to Related Rates: Helicopter Distance and Direction

What is the concept of related rates in science?

Related rates is a mathematical concept used to describe the change in one quantity with respect to another quantity. It is commonly used in physics, engineering, and other scientific fields to analyze the relationships between different variables.

How do you solve related rates problems?

To solve related rates problems, you must first identify the variables involved and the equations that relate them. Then, you can use calculus techniques such as implicit differentiation and the chain rule to find the rate of change of one variable in terms of another.

What is the roflcopter phenomenon in related rates?

The roflcopter phenomenon is a fictional concept often used in related rates problems to demonstrate the change in one variable with respect to another. It is typically used as a humorous way to introduce the concept of related rates and does not have any scientific significance.

What are some real-world applications of related rates?

Related rates can be applied to various real-world scenarios, such as determining the rate at which a balloon is inflating, the speed at which a ladder is sliding down a wall, or the rate at which the water level in a tank is changing. It is also commonly used in physics and engineering to analyze the motion of objects and systems.

What are the common challenges in solving related rates problems?

Some common challenges in solving related rates problems include identifying the relevant variables and equations, understanding how the variables are related, and applying calculus techniques correctly. It can also be challenging to visualize the problem and determine the appropriate units for the rates of change.
