In summary, the conversation discusses the probabilities of drawing two marbles at random from a bag containing 3 black marbles, 2 green marbles, and 1 white marble. The first probability (a) is for both marbles being black, and is calculated to be 1/4. The second probability (b) is for the marbles being of different colors, and is calculated in two attempts, both resulting in 22/36. Attempt B is deemed to be neater than Attempt A.

Homework Statement

A bag contains 3 black marbles, 2 green marbles and 1 white marble. Two marbles are drawn at random from the bag WITH replacement. Find the probabilities that the two marbles are

(a)black
(b)of different colours

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

(a)P(both black) = 3/6 x 3/6 = 1/4

(b) I have two attempts for this.

Attempt A
P(of different colours) = P(B,G) + P(B,W) + P(G,W) + P(G,B) + P(W,B) + P(W,G)
= (3/6)(2/6) + (3/6)(1/6) + (2/6)(1/6) + (2/6)(3/6) + (1/6)(3/6) + (1/6)(2/6)
= 22/36

Attempt B
P(of different colours) = 1 - P(both black) - P(both green) - P(both white)
= 1 - (3/6)(3/6) - (2/6)(2/6) - (1/6)(1/6)
= 22/36

Any problems for any of the attempt above?

hi kenny1999!

looks fine

(B is probably neater than A)

Related to Probability of Two Marbles Drawn: Black & Diff Cols

1. What is the probability of drawing two black marbles from a bag of marbles with different colors?

The probability of drawing two black marbles from a bag of marbles with different colors depends on the total number of marbles in the bag and the ratio of black marbles to the total number of marbles. For example, if there are 10 marbles in the bag and 3 of them are black, the probability would be 3/10 x 2/9 = 1/15 or approximately 6.67%.

2. How does the number of black marbles in the bag affect the probability of drawing two black marbles?

The more black marbles there are in the bag, the higher the probability of drawing two black marbles. This is because there are more black marbles available to be drawn. However, the ratio of black marbles to the total number of marbles also plays a significant role in determining the probability.

3. Is there a way to increase the probability of drawing two black marbles from a bag with different colored marbles?

Yes, the probability can be increased by adding more black marbles to the bag or by reducing the total number of marbles in the bag. This would increase the ratio of black marbles to the total number of marbles, thereby increasing the probability of drawing two black marbles.

4. What is the probability of drawing two different colored marbles from a bag with different colored marbles?

The probability of drawing two different colored marbles from a bag with different colored marbles will depend on the ratio of the different colored marbles to the total number of marbles in the bag. For example, if there are 10 marbles in the bag and 3 are black, the probability of drawing two different colored marbles would be 7/10 x 6/9 = 7/15 or approximately 46.67%.

5. How does the order in which the marbles are drawn affect the probability?

The order in which the marbles are drawn does not affect the probability of drawing two black marbles. This is because the probability is calculated based on the total number of marbles and the ratio of black marbles to the total number of marbles in the bag, which remains the same regardless of the order in which the marbles are drawn.
