Pelosi & Boehner's Inaugural Kiss: Setting Precedent in House

In summary, House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio handed over the speaker's gavel to Nancy Pelosi, who accepted it with hugs and a kiss for the Republican leader. This marks a new precedent for a change-of-command ceremony in the House and has received humorous reactions from both liberals and conservatives. Pelosi's affectionate behavior has been dubbed "Puckering Pelosi" and has brought a touch of unexpected comedy to the usually formal event.

..."Whether you're a Republican, a Democrat or an independent, today is a cause for celebration," said House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio, just before he handed over the speaker's gavel. Pelosi accepted it with hugs and a kiss for the Republican leader, almost certainly setting a new precedent for a change-of-command ceremony in the House...

Now, see how much better things are already with those touchy-feely liberals! Already they are on kissing terms!

On CNN they're calling her "Puckering Pelosi"

I think this is REALLY funny - not something I ever expected to see on the floor of the House. She was kissing everyone!

No doubt that'll appeal to 'family values' type Republicans... (I mean because she is a grandmother, had her grandchildren with her, etc)

Related to Pelosi & Boehner's Inaugural Kiss: Setting Precedent in House

1. What is the significance of Pelosi and Boehner's inaugural kiss?

The kiss between Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner at the 2011 presidential inauguration was seen as a significant moment in American politics. It symbolized a moment of bipartisanship and unity, as the two political leaders, who were known to have opposing views, came together to celebrate a shared democratic process.

2. Did this kiss set a precedent in the House of Representatives?

While there have been other instances of political leaders from opposing parties showing camaraderie, the Pelosi-Boehner kiss was the first time that a Speaker of the House (Pelosi) and the House Minority Leader (Boehner) shared a public kiss at a presidential inauguration. This moment has been seen as setting a precedent for future bipartisan gestures in the House.

3. Was the Pelosi-Boehner kiss planned or spontaneous?

There is some debate about whether the kiss between Pelosi and Boehner was planned or spontaneous. Some sources claim that it was a spontaneous moment of unity, while others suggest that it was planned as a way to show bipartisanship in the face of a divisive political climate.

4. How did the public react to the Pelosi-Boehner kiss?

The public reaction to the Pelosi-Boehner kiss was mixed. Some saw it as a genuine moment of unity and hope for bipartisanship, while others viewed it as a superficial gesture that did not reflect the true state of American politics. Some critics also saw it as a way for both politicians to gain positive media attention.

5. Has there been a similar bipartisan moment in the House since the Pelosi-Boehner kiss?

There have been a few instances of bipartisan moments in the House since the Pelosi-Boehner kiss. In 2013, Pelosi and Boehner shared a hug during the State of the Union address. In 2019, Pelosi also shared a handshake with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy during a congressional baseball game. While these moments may not have had the same level of attention as the Pelosi-Boehner kiss, they do demonstrate a continued effort towards bipartisanship in the House of Representatives.
