    Formula Sum
In summary, the conversation discussed finding the sum of two geometric series and the formula for calculating the sum of a geometric series. The first question was how to solve a problem using a formula, and the second question was to calculate specific sums of geometric series using the given formula.

Consider the following sum:

\(\displaystyle S_n=a^0+a^1+a^2+\cdots+a^n\tag{1}\)

Now multiply through by $a$:

\(\displaystyle aS_n=a^1+a^2+a^3+\cdots+a^{n+1}\tag{2}\)

What do you get if you subtract (1) from (2)?

Hello, susanto3311!

$1 + 7^1 + 7^2 + 7^3 + 7^4 + 7^5 \:=\:? $

$3^1 + 3^2 + 3^3 + 3^4 + 3^5 + 3^6 + 3^7 \:=\:?$

These are Geometric Series.
MarkFL indicated how we find the formulas for these series.

The sum of the first $n$ terms of Geometric Series

$\;\;\;$is given by: $\:S_n \;=\;a\,\dfrac{r^n\,-\,1}{r\,-\,1}$

where: $\:\begin{Bmatrix}a &=& \text{first term} \\ r &=& \text{common ratio} \\ n &=& \text{no. of terms}\end{Bmatrix}$

Related to Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]

What is "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]"?

"Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]" is a formula shortcut that allows you to easily add up a range of cells in a spreadsheet. It is often used in data analysis and financial modeling.

How do I use "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]"?

To use "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]", you can either type "=SUM()" in a cell and manually select the cells you want to add, or you can use the shortcut Alt+= to automatically insert the formula and select the cells for you.

What are the benefits of using "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]"?

The main benefit of using "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]" is that it saves time and reduces the chance of human error when adding up a large range of cells. It also allows for easier manipulation of data and can be used for more complex calculations such as adding up multiple ranges of cells or excluding certain cells from the sum.

Are there any limitations to using "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]"?

One limitation of using "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]" is that it only works with numerical data. If there are any non-numerical values within the selected range of cells, the formula will return an error. Additionally, the shortcut may not work in certain versions or programs of spreadsheet software.

Can "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]" be used for other types of calculations?

Yes, "Need Sum of Formula [shortcut]" can be modified to perform other types of calculations such as finding the average, maximum, or minimum value of a range of cells. This can be done by changing the "SUM" function within the formula to a different function, such as "AVERAGE" or "MAX".
