Mentor Tagging: Making PF Newbie Friendly

In summary, a suggestion was made to include a visible tag indicating the specialization of mentors on the forum in order to make it more newbie friendly and reduce misdirected PMs. However, this may also invite more PMs. The conversation also touched on the current system for listing mentors and the purpose of the "Feedback Forum." There was also a humorous exchange about the title of the thread and a mention of a new necklace.

I just thought of this, don't know if it'll make a big difference but it could help to make PF more newbie friendly. At present the "Mentor" labels don't indicate the specialisation of the mentors, such as whether they're math/physics/bio/chem/etc. mentors. Perhaps if we included a second visible tag below the "Mentor" tag stating the specialisation of the mentors, forum newbies would know who to contact for help on certain threads. This would also help reduce a lot of misdirected PMs, but may in turn invite more PMs.

Just a thought. What do you guys think?

Each forum has the mentors responsible for it listed at the bottom. This information is also repeated in the staff list. Those of us listed for the feedback forum are "floating" mentors. If someone contacts one of us and their question is related to a forum outside our area of expertise, it's easy enough for us to forward the question to a more appropriate mentor.

Oh ... From its title, I thought this thread was about establishing migration patterns.

Al Moonbear said, clicking on the "staff" link under the "P" of the title "Physics Forums" at the top of each page reveals a list of Mentors and areas, Administrators, Homework Helpers, and Science Advsiors,

Oh, I was wondering where this new necklace came from that I can't seem to get off.

Related to Mentor Tagging: Making PF Newbie Friendly

1. What is mentor tagging?

Mentor tagging is a process in which experienced members of a community, often called mentors, are assigned to new members, often called mentees. The mentors provide guidance, support, and resources to help the mentees navigate and become more familiar with the community.

2. Why is mentor tagging important for making PF (personal finance) forums newbie friendly?

Mentor tagging is important because it helps new members feel welcomed and supported in the community. It also allows them to learn from experienced members and avoid common mistakes. This can create a more positive and inclusive environment for newbies, making them more likely to continue participating in the forum.

3. How are mentors selected for mentor tagging?

Mentors are typically selected based on their level of experience and knowledge in the community. They should also demonstrate a willingness to help and support others. Some communities may have an application process or specific criteria for selecting mentors, while others may rely on recommendations from current members or moderators.

4. Can anyone become a mentor in mentor tagging?

While anyone can offer support and guidance to others, becoming an official mentor in mentor tagging usually requires meeting certain criteria set by the community. This could include a certain level of experience, a track record of helpfulness, and a commitment to the community's values and guidelines.

5. How can I get involved in mentor tagging as a newbie?

If you are interested in becoming a mentee in a mentor tagging program, you can usually reach out to the community's moderators or mentors to express your interest. They may have a formal process for assigning mentees or may be able to pair you with a mentor based on your interests and needs. It's also important to actively participate in the community and be open to learning and receiving guidance from your mentor.
