Is statistical ornithology a job?

In summary: Thanks for the input, I appreciate it!In summary, a scientist is holed in a basement room of a university and he studies statistics of birds, which is a job title that I made up.

Basically, I'm writing a story but I don't think this qualifies for the relevant board. So, I've got a scientist who's holed in a basement room of some university with his computer, and he presumably studies statistics of birds (or something, but using a computer). Is there a name for his job description? I mean as far as I've been able to see, actual ornithologists spend quite a bit of time in the field, and this guy can't go because of a disability.

I think you might need to swap the words around to get a job title out of that, ornithological statistician. Considering there are statistics involved in ornithology and you're writing a story, I can't see why you can't make this job up. Worse science has been proposed (2012), I would consider it plausible and if I saw it written in a book, I wouldn't bat an eyelid at the concept.

You'd basically be doing what is done in the world of work all the time, splitting jobs into more specialised fields and let's face it if there's any field that is renowned for specialisation, it's the sciences.

Thanks a bunch for the input. Regardless of artistic license, I like your wording much better. There's something a bit more job-titley in "ornithological statistician"... If mine was a job title at all.

That's quite okay, glad I could be of help :) I'm not a biologist but I'm pretty good at language which is why I made that conclusion. I think maybe statistical ornithology, if a sub-field, would be the field of research and the job would be ornithological statistician, because the generalisation comes second. Theoretical physicists are a type of physicist, for example.

Yes, statistical ornithology is a legitimate job in the field of ornithology. This type of scientist uses statistical methods and computer technology to analyze data related to birds and their behavior. They may study population trends, migration patterns, or other aspects of bird biology using statistical techniques.

The specific job title for this type of scientist may vary, but they could be called a statistical ornithologist, quantitative ornithologist, or avian data analyst. Their work is crucial in understanding and conserving bird populations, and their skills in data analysis and computer technology are highly valued in the field of ornithology.

While it is true that many ornithologists spend a significant amount of time in the field, there are also many who work primarily in a laboratory or office setting. This may be due to a variety of reasons, such as a disability or a research focus that does not require fieldwork. Regardless of their location, all ornithologists play an important role in advancing our understanding of birds and their conservation.

Related to Is statistical ornithology a job?

1. What is statistical ornithology?

Statistical ornithology is a branch of ornithology (the study of birds) that uses mathematical and statistical methods to analyze and interpret data related to bird populations, behavior, and ecology.

2. Is statistical ornithology a common job?

No, statistical ornithology is not a common job. It is a specialized field within ornithology and there are relatively few job opportunities specifically for statistical ornithologists.

3. What kind of education is required for a career in statistical ornithology?

A career in statistical ornithology typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as biology, statistics, or ecology. Many employers also prefer candidates with a master's or doctoral degree.

4. What are some job opportunities in statistical ornithology?

Job opportunities in statistical ornithology may include positions in government agencies, non-profit organizations, research institutions, and consulting firms. Some common job titles may include wildlife biologist, conservation scientist, or research analyst.

5. What skills are important for a career in statistical ornithology?

In addition to a strong understanding of ornithology and statistics, some important skills for a career in statistical ornithology may include data analysis, computer programming, and communication skills. Fieldwork experience and knowledge of specific statistical software may also be beneficial.
