Within the context of his time, he did see what no one else saw. His method of inductive and 4 idols of the mind heavily influence us today. His 4 Idols of the mind commonly spring up in philosophical conversations and debates against religious people. We use them commonly without realizing it when we are thinking critically.
I think he is not credited enough for his realizations. Specifically one of my textbooks directly suggests that he is not critically important. The author refers to him as a "cheerleader" motiving the method of induction.
