Is cosmopsychism theory just babble copied from The Force?

In summary, the conversation discusses the concept of cosmopsychism, which suggests that the Universe is a sentient being that has intentionally fine-tuned itself to allow for the existence of complex life. The "fine structure constant" is mentioned as a crucial factor in this theory. However, the validity of this theory is debated and is not considered scientific or based in cosmology.

By "The Force" I mean from "Star Wars".

https://aeon.co/essays/cosmopsychism-explains-why-the-universe-is-fine-tuned-for-life

The author seems to say that the Universe is an active sentient agent that has fine-tuned itself so as to make the fundamental forces of nature be such as to allow for chemical elements (past hydrogen) and chemistry to happen. My understanding is that the constant known as the "fine structure constant" has to be just about exactly what it is for the complexity in the Universe to be as it it, so it would seem that the author is saying that the Universe Herself decided on this constant.

Obi-Wan, please tell me this is some metaphysics babble.

Whatever it is, it isn't science or cosmology.

Related to Is cosmopsychism theory just babble copied from The Force?

1. Is cosmopsychism theory based on Star Wars' concept of The Force?

No, cosmopsychism theory is a philosophical concept that has been around since ancient times. It predates the creation of Star Wars and is not directly influenced by it.

2. What exactly is cosmopsychism theory?

Cosmopsychism theory is the belief that the universe is conscious and that this consciousness permeates everything within it. It suggests that the cosmos is not just a collection of matter, but a living, self-aware entity.

3. How is cosmopsychism theory different from other theories of consciousness?

Cosmopsychism theory is unique in that it suggests that the consciousness of the universe is the source of all individual consciousness. Other theories of consciousness focus on individual minds and how they perceive and experience the world.

4. Is there any scientific evidence to support cosmopsychism theory?

Currently, there is no concrete scientific evidence to support cosmopsychism theory. It is a philosophical concept that is difficult to test empirically. However, some scientists and philosophers argue that certain phenomena, such as the interconnectedness of the universe, could be seen as evidence for cosmopsychism.

5. Are there any notable proponents of cosmopsychism theory?

Yes, there are several notable proponents of cosmopsychism theory, including philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, physicist Freeman Dyson, and neuroscientist Christof Koch. However, it is still a relatively niche belief and not widely accepted in the scientific community.
