In summary, the conversation discusses the request for a book recommendation on higher math concepts for a gifted 10-year-old who is currently taking algebra 1. The speaker suggests a four-volume survey of mathematics, which includes essays and excerpts on various topics. They also mention that it is more of an inspirational choice rather than a textbook, but still worth considering. The speaker also notes that the niece has no trouble understanding complex literature, so a language barrier should not be a concern.

My niece is 10 years old and taking algebra 1 this year in school. She's very gifted and driven to pursue math. I want to give her a book that is going to introduce her to higher math concepts like sets and basic proofs, but I don't know what kind of book would be appropriate for her. She doesn't have much of a problem digesting Tolkien, so I doubt there will be a language barrier to higher level maths. Any ideas?

When I was about that age, long ago, I got a lot of pleasure out of this four-volume survey of mathematics:

It's not a textbook, but a collection of essays and excerpts of larger works, on many mathematical topics. See the http://www.project2061.org/publications/rsl/online/Tradebks/TOCS/WORLMATH.HTM. It's more of an inspirational choice rather than a didactic choice, but you might want to consider it anyway.
