Finding Common perpendicular of two lines

In summary, the conversation discusses finding the common perpendicular between two equations and how to calculate the distance between them. The participants also mention using the cross product to find a perpendicular vector and the duplication of the thread being against forum rules.

Hi there,
The two given lines:
1) x / 2 = (y-1) / 2 = z
2) x + 1 = y – 2 = (z + 4) / 2
I need to find the common perpendicular between them.
Though when I tried to calculate the distance between them, I get 0.

Can someone please help?

Thanks in advance

pick any two points on the same line, what about their difference?

Related to Finding Common perpendicular of two lines

1. What is a common perpendicular of two lines?

A common perpendicular is a line that intersects two other lines at a 90-degree angle. It is also known as a perpendicular bisector because it divides the two lines into equal parts.

2. How do you find the common perpendicular of two lines?

To find the common perpendicular of two lines, you first need to find the slopes of the two lines. Then, find the negative reciprocal of each slope. Finally, use the point-slope formula to find the equation of the common perpendicular line.

3. Can there be more than one common perpendicular of two lines?

No, there can only be one common perpendicular of two lines. This is because the common perpendicular must intersect both lines at a 90-degree angle, and only one line can do so at a given point.

4. What is the significance of finding the common perpendicular of two lines?

Finding the common perpendicular of two lines is useful in geometry and engineering applications. It helps determine the shortest distance between two lines and is also used in constructing right angles and perpendicular shapes.

5. Is it possible for two lines to not have a common perpendicular?

Yes, it is possible for two lines to not have a common perpendicular. This occurs when the two lines are parallel or when they are skewed and do not intersect at all.
