Electron Spin: +-1/2 | Physics Forum Q&A

In summary, electron spin is an intrinsic property of an electron that describes its angular momentum and can have a value of +1/2 or -1/2. It is related to magnetism because electrons with opposite spins have opposite magnetic moments. The spin of an electron can be changed through various processes, but the spin value itself cannot be changed. Electron spin is used in technologies such as magnetic storage devices, spintronics, and quantum computing. In chemistry, it plays a crucial role in determining electronic structure, reactivity, and stability of compounds.

Thanks for deleting my post ... so how do you explain spin (or charge) quantization if you don't like topological explanation (exactly like behind quantization of magnetic field in superconductors)?

Related to Electron Spin: +-1/2 | Physics Forum Q&A

1. What is electron spin?

Electron spin is an intrinsic property of an electron that describes its angular momentum. It is a quantum mechanical property and can have a value of +1/2 or -1/2.

2. How is electron spin related to magnetism?

Electron spin is related to magnetism because electrons with opposite spins have opposite magnetic moments. This means that electrons with +1/2 spin will create a magnetic field in one direction, while electrons with -1/2 spin will create a magnetic field in the opposite direction.

3. Can the spin of an electron be changed?

Yes, the spin of an electron can be changed through various processes such as interactions with other particles or exposure to external magnetic fields. However, the spin value itself (±1/2) cannot be changed as it is an intrinsic property of the electron.

4. How is electron spin used in technology?

Electron spin is used in various technologies such as magnetic storage devices, spintronics, and quantum computing. By manipulating the spin of electrons, we can control the flow of electrons and create new electronic devices with enhanced functionality.

5. Why is electron spin important in chemistry?

Electron spin is important in chemistry because it plays a crucial role in determining the electronic structure and reactivity of atoms and molecules. It also helps explain the stability of certain chemical compounds and the behavior of electrons in chemical reactions.
