Direction of current in a magnetic field when loop is square

In summary, we have a flexible wire loop with a radius of 0.178 m in a uniform magnetic field of 0.332 T. The loop is stretched until its area is zero, with points P and Q grasped. It takes 0.146 s to close the loop. To find the current induced, we can use the formula EMF = ∆Phi/∆t, where Phi is the magnetic flux. The direction of the current can be determined using the right hand rule. This situation is similar to a rotating loop in a magnetic field, where the exposed area changes but the number of turns remains constant.

Homework Statement

A flexible wire loop has a radius of r = 0.178 m and it is inside a uniform magnetic field of B = 0.332 T. The loop is grasped at points P and Q and stretched until its area is zero. It takes 0.146 s to close the loop.

Homework Equations

EMF = ∆Phi/∆t
Phi = magnetic flux

The Attempt at a Solution

Used the formula above.So where is current induced? In the wire? Due to the change in magnetic field then? Or magnetic flux? How do I find its direction... I mean, I know if you have magnetic field, then you use right hand rule, right? Anyway, how do I find direction here?

The same thing happens when a loop rotates in a magnetic field - the exposed area to the constant magnetic field changes, although the amount of turns in the coil stays the same.

Related to Direction of current in a magnetic field when loop is square

1. What is the direction of the current in a square loop when placed in a magnetic field?

The direction of the current in a square loop when placed in a magnetic field is dependent on the direction of the magnetic field and the orientation of the loop. The current will flow in a direction that is perpendicular to both the magnetic field and the orientation of the loop.

2. Does the direction of the current change if the magnetic field is reversed?

Yes, the direction of the current will change if the magnetic field is reversed. This is because the current flows in a direction that is perpendicular to the magnetic field, so when the field is reversed, the current will also reverse direction.

3. How does the orientation of the loop affect the direction of the current?

The orientation of the loop plays a crucial role in determining the direction of the current. If the loop is oriented parallel to the magnetic field, the current will not flow. However, if the loop is perpendicular to the field, the current will flow in a direction perpendicular to both the field and the loop.

4. Can the direction of the current be changed by changing the shape of the loop?

Yes, the direction of the current can be changed by changing the shape of the loop. The current will always flow in a direction that is perpendicular to the magnetic field and the orientation of the loop. Therefore, changing the shape of the loop will also change the orientation of the loop and thus, change the direction of the current.

5. How does the strength of the magnetic field affect the direction of the current in a square loop?

The strength of the magnetic field does not affect the direction of the current in a square loop. The current will always flow in a direction that is perpendicular to the field, regardless of its strength. However, a stronger magnetic field will result in a greater force on the current-carrying loop.
