In summary, the garden will feature stone chippings as the groundcover, cacti as the focal point, and a variety of low growing flowers. If the flowers do not survive in the cold weather, the garden will include a smoke stack and an auto watering system to help keep the plants hydrated.

I have a small area that i would like to have as a sort of minimalist garden
with slow growing plants, i plan to cover most of it with stone chippings,
i thought cacti might look good, will they grow in the UK? it is not as cold
and wet as it used to be of late.

Some can tolerate considerable cold. You may wish to consult with a garden shop in your area - they'll know. There are lots of succulents that tolerate cold, too, and they look pretty neat with cacti.

You might want to check with your local horticultural extension. Here's a link to one in Missouri, near here. They're full of helpful information for your area.

Scratch that idea, i think i will have to go to a garden center and ask them,
not that i trust them much, my hanging baskets only lasted a month.

Warwickshire is in Hardiness zone 8a.

It's just a matter of finding cacti that will manage in that zone.

Unfortunately, I see that many cacti are more like hardiness 14-18. Even hens & chicks prefer 9a.

Thank you hypatia.

Later on i plan to make a crude model of a steam engine with open
carridges and then fill them with more slow growing flowers, i would be
quite annoyed if the flowers died, i even planed to have the smoke
stack as a water container and have an auto watering system.

1. Can cacti survive in the cold weather of the UK?

Yes, cacti can survive in the cold weather of the UK as long as they are protected from frost and extreme temperatures. They are adapted to harsh desert environments and can withstand colder temperatures as long as they are not exposed to freezing temperatures for prolonged periods of time.

2. Do cacti require a lot of sunlight to grow in the UK?

Yes, cacti do require a lot of sunlight in order to thrive and grow in the UK. In fact, they need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It is important to place them in a sunny spot, such as a south-facing window, in order for them to grow properly.

3. Do cacti need special soil to grow in the UK?

Yes, cacti do require a special type of soil in order to grow in the UK. They need well-draining soil that is specifically made for cacti and succulents. This type of soil is usually a mixture of sand, perlite, and potting soil that allows for proper drainage and aeration for the cactus roots.
