Can a microorganism change the behavior of an animal?

In summary, this article discusses how plants can induce defences that reduce herbivory. This is done by increasing cannibalism.

A significant case of Salmonella, gonococcus, HIV, or Staph will certainly change a human's behavior!

A rather obvious example is any bug which makes people cough or sneeze

"Acquired Lavish Altruism Syndrome"
What a way to go!
I think it's still not legal in most countries though,

What is a microorganism?

A microorganism is a tiny, single-celled organism that can only be seen with a microscope. These organisms can include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

How can a microorganism change the behavior of an animal?

Microorganisms can produce toxins or chemicals that can directly affect the nervous system of an animal, causing changes in their behavior. They can also disrupt hormone levels or alter the production of neurotransmitters, which can also impact behavior.

Can a microorganism change the behavior of any animal?

Yes, microorganisms have the ability to change the behavior of a wide range of animals, including insects, mammals, and even humans.

What are some examples of microorganisms changing animal behavior?

One example is the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, which can infect rodents and cause them to become attracted to the scent of cat urine, increasing their chances of being eaten by cats and completing the parasite's life cycle. Another example is the rabies virus, which can alter the behavior of infected animals and make them more aggressive.

Can a microorganism permanently change an animal's behavior?

In most cases, the changes in behavior caused by microorganisms are temporary and will subside once the infection is treated. However, in some cases, the impact on behavior can be long-lasting, especially if the microorganism causes damage to the animal's nervous system or brain.
