Beginning a new semester - tips

In summary, the conversation focused on preparing for a new semester of school and rituals that have been successful for others. One suggestion was to email professors and ask for a rough syllabus outline, while another was to get a good grasp of the concepts that will be covered early on. It was also recommended to enjoy the vacation before the semester starts. Additionally, there was a discussion about finding helpful study tips on Physics Forums.

Hey,

For most of us undergraduates, it's that time to start a new semester of school. I was just curious as to what "rituals" you may have found successful in preparing yourself for a new term. Anything related to organizing yourself, overviewing the material in any particular way, talking to professors, other students, etc. I want to start the semester with the feeling of purpose or a plan instead of just jumping blindly into the work.

Thanks

I email professors and ask for a rough syllabus outline for classes I expect to be particularly difficult. I try to get an "idea" of what's going on for the major sections of the semester.

If I have more time, I try to get a "good" grasp of the concepts that will be covered early in the semester so that I can stay ahead of the curve.

After reading textbooks ahead of the class, I have to say, the best ritual for getting back into the semester is enjoying the vacation.
Seriously, it's good advice and I'm not exactly a lazy student either, so don't disregard it.

There was a great thread with some especially good study tips a while back. I did a quick PF search to see if I could find it, but didn't have the time to go through the hit list. Maybe read through these threads to see what pearls you can find:
