In summary, the problem involves finding the final temperature of a 100-g piece of metal and 100 g of water after the metal is submerged in the water. The specific heat capacities of iron and water are given, and the equation q=mc(delta T) is used to solve for the final temperature. However, without being able to see the work, the incorrect answer cannot be determined.

Homework Statement

A 100-g piece of metal initially at T = 75oC is submerged in 100 g of water initially at T = 25oC. The specific heat capacity of iron is 0.45 J g-1 °C-1 and the specific heat capacity of water is 4.18 J g-1 °C-1. What is the final temperature of both substances in oC?

Homework Equations

q=mc(delta T)

The Attempt at a Solution

well i tried to set mc(delta T)=mc(delta T), plug in all the values and solve for T(final), but i keep getting the wrong answer

.

I would like to clarify that the equation q=mc(delta T) should be used to calculate the heat transfer between two substances, not the final temperature. To calculate the final temperature, we need to use the equation m1c1T1 + m2c2T2 = m1c1Tf + m2c2Tf, where m1 and m2 are the masses of the metal and water respectively, c1 and c2 are the specific heat capacities, and T1 and T2 are the initial temperatures. This equation takes into account the heat transfer between the two substances and the final temperature reached by both substances. By plugging in the given values, we can solve for Tf, which is the final temperature of both the metal and water.
