B Why did they change the sign to be negative?

http://imgur.com/BNQPAQa I'm missing something. Why does x+1/x suddenly become x-1/x2? I get that they moved the x to the top, subtracted the -1-1, but does that exclusively set the fraction negative all on its own ? I've computed it by hand. 1-2 comes out to be 1... So why is it negative... ?

I What am I missing here in this difference quotient problem?

Does that mean that since delta x is approaching zero, it is just left out because it is so small? I guess I just don't understand at all.

I What am I missing here in this difference quotient problem?

I've highlighted the part in yellow I don't understand. He apparently 'drops' Δx in the last line, but doesn't display how. What I do know is that he is taking the limit as Δx→0, or as Delta x approaches zero. I'm simpy missing what he did though to drop the Δx. I mean, I understand he...

    Graphing a variation of y=sin-x

Have you seen his previous comments on my threads? He literally follows me around on the forums and posts rude and harassing stuff. If that's the type of environment you condone on this site, I will leave Physics Forums and go elsewhere. I thought this was a place for people who needed help that...

    Graphing a variation of y=sin-x

I appreciate the clarification and the cool graph you made! I was just a little bit confused where they were drawing the values 0, 1, 0, -1, 0 from. It appears that they are multiplying the constant A by all of the values of the original amplitude, where the original amplitude is 1. However, the...

    Graphing a variation of y=sin-x

I'm not asking anyone to answer a question for me. That's like making a list of my homework problems and posting them with no attempt to solve them. I made a fair inference on how they were getting the information, and asked for confirmation or clarification. You're clearly trying to portray me...

    Graphing a variation of y=sin-x

You are extremely rude and disrespectful, not only to me, but to everyone else you reply to. I have actually spent the last week and a half reading my trigonometry book from cover to cover, 9 hours a day, and I'm on chapter 4. So you telling me to 'spend more time looking at what is in front of...

    Graphing a variation of y=sin-x

I put the - as a spacer so to speak rather than leaving it as sinx or sin x :-p

    Graphing a variation of y=sin-x

Just have a quick question about this problem in the photo... I'm not sure how they got the values 0, 1, 0, -1, 0 that they are multiplying by y=sin-x in the chart: For example. Look at the second row, pi/2. They apparently multiply 1/2 by 1 to get 1/2, but they never indicate where/how they...

Is x2+16 Prime? Understanding the Nature of this Polynomial

I honestly have no idea  2k2+16... It seems like we can factor out a 2. 2(k2+8)?

Is x2+16 Prime? Understanding the Nature of this Polynomial

Homework Statement x2+16Homework Equations ? The Attempt at a Solution If you attempt to solve it with (x+4)(x+4), it results in x2+8x+16, which is not equivalent. I believe it may be prime. I am looking for the formula (if there is any) to explain this. Allow me to give an example: a2+2ab+b2...

Systems of Equations: What's your favorite way to solve them?

Could you direct me towards a course of action or maybe some study plan to prepare myself for precalculus?

Systems of Equations: What's your favorite way to solve them?

You think this will make me better at math seriously? Not being sarcastic.

Systems of Equations: What's your favorite way to solve them?

Jeez, that's why I'm here -_- I have never pretended to know everything, and I am more than well aware that there is a lot I don't know and that I'm not ready for calculus. For the past few weeks, I've been studying algebra and trigonometry for around five hours a day, sometimes even more. My...

Systems of Equations: What's your favorite way to solve them?

"Severe lack of understand" really now? it could also be one of my weaknesses, such as working with fractions or multiplying fractions. I've never had a teacher go over negative one to the 10th power, which is probably why I didn't know how to computed were calculated. You have to understand...
