Introductory Model theory books

In summary, there are several recommendations for a cheap introductory model theory book, including "Foundations of Mathematics" by K. Kunen, "Model Theory" by Chang and Keisler, and "Model Theory: An Introduction" by Marker. It is also suggested to learn about universal algebra. The book "Model Theory: An Introduction" by Marker is highly recommended for its applications to other fields of mathematics, with a special section on group theory.

Hello, I'm looking for an introductory model theory book that is relatively cheap. Any suggestions?
Currently reading from "A Shorter Model Theory" by Wilfrid Hodges from a school copy, I may buy this one .. unless anybody has any other suggestions?

Thanks

The Marker book is very interesting looking, especially if you are interested in seeing applications of model theory ( and logic ) to other fields of mathematics!
The one I like at the moment is:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/9056993135/?tag=pfamazon01-20

and it has a pretty cool section about group theory!

Related to Introductory Model theory books

1. What is model theory?

Model theory is a branch of mathematical logic that studies the relationships between formal languages and their interpretations, also known as models. It aims to understand the fundamental properties of mathematical structures and the ways in which they can be classified.

2. What are some common applications of model theory?

Model theory has many applications in different fields, including computer science, philosophy, linguistics, and artificial intelligence. It is used to study the foundations of mathematics, analyze the structure of programming languages, and investigate the logical structure of natural language.

3. What topics are typically covered in an introductory model theory book?

Introductory model theory books typically cover topics such as first-order logic, syntax and semantics, theories and models, completeness and compactness theorems, and definability and interpretability. They may also include chapters on advanced topics such as stability theory and model-theoretic algebra.

4. Do I need to have a strong background in mathematics to understand model theory?

While some familiarity with mathematical concepts is helpful, many introductory model theory books are written in a way that is accessible to readers with a basic understanding of logic and set theory. Some books may also include review sections on necessary mathematical concepts.

5. Are there any recommended introductory model theory books?

Yes, some popular introductory model theory books include "A Course in Model Theory" by Terence Tao, "Model Theory: An Introduction" by David Marker, and "Model Theory" by Wilfrid Hodges. It is recommended to read reviews and compare different books to find one that best suits your learning style and level of understanding.
