Work done to overcome friction

In summary, the conversation is about a question involving a block with a mass of 30kg sliding on a rough inclined plane with a length of 8m and a 28 degree angle to the horizontal. The question asks for the work done to overcome friction and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane. The person has solved for the kinetic energy and found it to be 360.15J, but is unsure of how this relates to the work done to overcome friction, which they have calculated to be -745.36J. The conversation then shifts to discussing the relationship between work, kinetic energy, and potential energy, and the possibility of using a different value for gravitational acceleration.

im having a hard time to solve this work done by overcoming friction question. help please?

Question: a block with mass 30kg slide on a rough inclined plane with 8m long and 28 degree to horizontal with acceleration 1.5ms^-2.
a)Calculate the work done to overcome friction.
b)the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane

Start by writing down the free-body diagram equations.

  • #3
done that and got kE=360.15J

  • #4
And how does this help?

  • #5
well, the answer for work done to overcome friction is WFf= -745.36J. wonder why was that.

  • #6
What is the relationship between work, kinetic and potential energy?

  • #7
it helps abit but i got (-745.17J) tho

What value are you using for g (gravitational acceleration)? Perhaps the problem statement is using a different value than what you're using.

Related to Work done to overcome friction

What is friction?

Friction is a force that resists the motion of an object when it is in contact with another object or surface.

What is work done to overcome friction?

Work done to overcome friction is the energy expended to overcome the resistance of friction and move an object over a surface.

How is work done to overcome friction calculated?

Work done to overcome friction can be calculated by multiplying the force required to overcome friction by the distance the object travels.

What factors affect the amount of work done to overcome friction?

The amount of work done to overcome friction is affected by the type of surface the object is moving on, the weight of the object, and the force applied to move the object.

Why is reducing friction important in certain industries?

Reducing friction is important in certain industries because it can increase efficiency and decrease wear and tear on machinery, leading to cost savings and improved productivity.
