I know that for a rocket ship to escape Earth's gravity, it must be going at least 17,500 mph, or else it won't go into orbit.
For a black hole, light can't escape because a black hole's escape velocity is faster than c.
But why is there an escape velocity for objects with mass?
Why could I not theoretically get in a space suit and climb an infinite ladder to mars?
