I'll do this as an open forum since a poll won't work here.
For me I have to break it down by genre, so
Horror- Stephen King- I know he's been described as a serial horror writer who churns books out without creativity in mind, but I've been reading him since I was 11 and picked up the bachman books.
Science Fiction- Toss up between Asimov- for his foundation series, and Adam's Hitchhiker series.
Fantasy- Anything Tolkien is a classic-Just banged out the simmarrillion 15 years after I first picked up the hobbit. And C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia
Mystery- Not to tout all the classics here, but Sir Aurthur Connan Doyle's Sherlock is an indomitable character.
