White House Staffers Keep Same Coverage?

In summary, starting in 2014, all members of Congress and their personal aides will be required to get health insurance through the state exchanges, like all other Americans who are not covered by their employer. However, certain congressional leadership staffers and White House staffers, including the president himself, will be allowed to keep their current plans and not participate in the new system. This has caused controversy and accusations of a double standard, as the new health care law is meant to affect all Americans.

ome 2014, all 100 U.S. senators, all 435 representatives in the House and every one of their personal aides will have to go to the newly formed state exchanges for health insurance -- just like everyone else in the country who isn't covered by their employer.

But select congressional leadership staffers -- some of whom wrote the health insurance act -- won't. And neither will White House staffers and Cabinet members -- nor the president himself. They will be allowed to keep their current plans, which are offered to all other federal employees. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/03/25/congressional-staffers-complain-double-standard-health-care-law/"

President Obama declared that the new health care law "is going to be affecting every American family." Except his own, of course.

The new health care law exempts the president from having to participate in it. Leadership and committee staffers in the House and Senate who wrote the bill are exempted as well. A weasel-worded definition of "staff" includes only the members' personal staff in the new system; the committee staff that drafted the legislation opted themselves out. Because they were more familiar with the contents of the law than anyone in the country, it says a lot that they carved out their own special loophole. Anyway, the law is intended to affect "ordinary Americans," according to Vice President Joe Biden (who - being a heartbeat away from the presidency - also is not covered), not Washington insiders. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/mar/23/obamacare-for-everyone-but-obama/"

Is this just a bunch of hogwash and a misinterpretation of the bill by the media? Or does the White House cabinet and the President get to keep the health care they have now, and not the state run plans that congress and the rest of the United States will be receiving around 2014?

I'm sure it also applies to the military. Cetain government staff have coverage under the military medical system. You won't see a President going to a private hospital, he'll go to a military hospital.
