Where can I find an NTU equation for a counter flow plate heat exchanger?

In summary, NTU is a dimensionless value used to measure the heat transfer efficiency of a plate heat exchanger. The flow arrangement of hot and cold fluids can greatly impact its performance. Plate heat exchangers can be used for both heating and cooling applications and offer advantages such as compact design, high heat transfer coefficients, and easy maintenance. Fouling and corrosion can be prevented through regular cleaning, using appropriate fluids, and chemical treatment.

Hi

I am woking on a project with dimensioning a plate heat exchanger and are looking at the effectiveness NTU method. The textbooks provide NTU equations for many kinds of heat exchangers but not for plate heat exchangers.

Does anyone knows where I can find an NTU equation for a counter flow plate heat exchanger?Best regards

Hello Henrik, welcome to PF  !

I googled around and found http://www.mie.uth.gr/ekp_yliko/CEP_Plate_and_Frame_HX.pdf and http://www.aidic.it/escape20/webpapers/569Arsenyeva.pdf and a few more.

Related to Where can I find an NTU equation for a counter flow plate heat exchanger?

1. What is NTU and how does it relate to plate heat exchangers?

NTU, or Number of Transfer Units, is a dimensionless value used to describe the heat transfer efficiency of a heat exchanger. It takes into account the heat transfer area, flow rate, and heat capacity of the fluids involved. In plate heat exchangers, the NTU value is used to determine the required size and design of the plates for efficient heat transfer.

2. How does the flow arrangement affect the performance of a plate heat exchanger?

The flow arrangement, or how the hot and cold fluids are directed through the plates, can greatly impact the performance of a plate heat exchanger. In a parallel flow arrangement, the fluids flow in the same direction, resulting in a higher overall heat transfer coefficient. In a counterflow arrangement, the fluids flow in opposite directions, allowing for a larger temperature difference between the two fluids and therefore a higher heat transfer rate.

3. Can a plate heat exchanger be used for both heating and cooling applications?

Yes, plate heat exchangers are versatile and can be used for both heating and cooling applications. By simply reversing the flow direction of the fluids, the heat exchanger can function in either heating or cooling mode. This makes them a popular choice for applications such as HVAC systems, refrigeration, and industrial processes.

4. What are the advantages of using a plate heat exchanger compared to other types of heat exchangers?

Plate heat exchangers offer several advantages over other types of heat exchangers. They have a compact design, requiring less space for installation. They also have high heat transfer coefficients, resulting in efficient heat transfer. Additionally, they are easy to maintain and can be easily disassembled for cleaning or maintenance purposes.

5. How can fouling and corrosion be prevented in a plate heat exchanger?

Fouling, the build-up of deposits on the heat transfer surfaces, and corrosion, the deterioration of the metal plates, can greatly affect the performance of a plate heat exchanger. To prevent these issues, regular cleaning and maintenance are necessary. Additionally, using the appropriate fluid for the specific application can also help prevent fouling and corrosion. Chemical treatment of the fluids can also be used to reduce the likelihood of these issues occurring.
