What is the direction of friction on a plate on two rotating wheels?

In summary, the conversation discusses the time period of oscillation of a uniform plate, given its mass, the separation between two rotating wheels, and the friction coefficient. The direction of friction is also mentioned, with the speaker expressing confusion about the direction of the right wheel's friction. The conversation ends with the speaker realizing that the plate is being lifted and displaced before being put back in contact with the rotating cylinder.

Homework Statement

A uniform plate of mass M stays horizontally and symmetrically on two wheels rotating in opposite
directions. The separation between the wheels is L. The friction coefficient between each wheel and the plate is N. Find the time period of oscillation of the plate if it is slightly displayed along its length and
released.

2. Homework Equations

My teacher solved this problem in class and i understood everything except the direction of friction. The plate moved to right by distance x.

The Attempt at a Solution

According to me right wheel should have direction of friction inside. Because plate wants to move out. So it will try to move back the plate left side.

How would the topmost point of the right wheel move with respect to the plate above it ? Towards right or left ?

i figured it out the my own. i thought that he is displacing the plate right while maintaining the contact with rotating cylinder. But He is lifting the plate, displacing it and then putting it back.

What is a "Plate on two rotating wheel" experiment?

A "Plate on two rotating wheel" experiment is a simple physics experiment that involves placing a plate on two rotating wheels and observing its behavior.

What is the purpose of this experiment?

The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the principles of rotational motion and how it affects the behavior of objects placed on rotating surfaces.

What materials are needed to conduct this experiment?

To conduct this experiment, you will need a plate, two rotating wheels, a motor or a hand crank to rotate the wheels, and a stable surface to place the experiment on.

What factors affect the behavior of the plate on two rotating wheels?

The behavior of the plate on two rotating wheels is affected by several factors, including the speed and direction of rotation of the wheels, the mass and shape of the plate, and the type of surface the experiment is conducted on.

What can be learned from this experiment?

This experiment can help us understand the principles of rotational motion, such as angular velocity, angular momentum, and centripetal force. It also demonstrates how these factors affect the stability and behavior of objects on rotating surfaces.
