What is the average speed of a gerbil running in a clear plastic tube?

In summary, the conversation discusses the calculation of average speed for a gerbil running in a clear plastic tube, based on a given displacement-time graph. The correct solution involves finding the total distance traveled and dividing it by the total time. The sum of the area under the curve must be calculated to find the total distance. There is a discussion about rounding and the final answer is determined to be 0.0571 m/s.

Since [tex]u_{average} = \frac{s_{total}}{t_{total}}[/tex], have to calculate the total distance traveled (not displacement), and divide it by the total time. To find the total distance, you would have to find the sum of the area under the curve.

how would u do that like a triangle? h = 2 b = 35 A=35 its wrong:(

Hmmm... seems to me like your original answer is right, but you didn't carry enough decimal places... maybe 0.0571m/s ?

that would be for a v-t graph wouldn't it? not a d-t graph.

Related to What is the average speed of a gerbil running in a clear plastic tube?

What is average speed?

Average speed is the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken to travel that distance. It is a measure of how fast an object is moving on average during a given period of time.

How is average speed calculated?

Average speed is calculated by dividing the total distance traveled by the total time taken to travel that distance. The result is usually expressed in units of distance per time, such as meters per second or miles per hour.

What is the difference between average speed and instantaneous speed?

Average speed is the overall speed of an object during a given period of time, while instantaneous speed is the speed of an object at a specific moment in time. Average speed takes into account the total distance traveled, while instantaneous speed only reflects the speed at a particular instant.

Why is average speed important?

Average speed is important because it gives us a measure of how fast an object is moving on average. It is used in many real-world applications, such as calculating travel time, fuel efficiency, and sports statistics.

Are there any limitations to using average speed?

Yes, there are limitations to using average speed. It does not take into account changes in speed or direction during the journey, and it may not accurately reflect the actual speed at any given moment. Additionally, it assumes a constant speed, which may not always be the case in real-world scenarios.
