What is Lockheed Martin's goal for their quantum computing investment?

In summary, quantum computing is a type of computing that uses quantum-mechanical phenomena to perform operations on data. It works by using qubits, which can exist in multiple states at the same time and are manipulated by quantum gates. The potential applications of quantum computing include cryptography, drug discovery, and artificial intelligence. However, there are challenges in developing quantum computers, such as maintaining the delicate quantum states of the qubits and scaling them to a larger number. It is difficult to predict when quantum computers will be widely available, but companies are investing in research and development to make it happen within the next decade.

What is it? Comfortable life for D-Wave founders ;)
Two months ago Lockheed Martin spent several millions on their machine.
Does anybody knows what L-M wants to do with this box?

@edpell: wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_computer) and Qubit.org (http://www.qubit.org/) are good starting points for this issue, definitely too wide to be covered in such post.

Related to What is Lockheed Martin's goal for their quantum computing investment?

1. What is quantum computing?

Quantum computing is a type of computing that uses quantum-mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, to perform operations on data. Unlike classical computers, which use bits to represent data as 0s and 1s, quantum computers use quantum bits (qubits) that can represent multiple values simultaneously and process information in a non-linear way.

2. How does quantum computing work?

Quantum computers use qubits, which can exist in multiple states at the same time, to perform calculations. These qubits are manipulated by quantum gates, which can change the state of the qubits based on rules of quantum mechanics. The ability to be in multiple states simultaneously allows quantum computers to process information much faster than classical computers.

3. What are the potential applications of quantum computing?

Quantum computing has the potential to greatly impact fields such as cryptography, drug discovery, and artificial intelligence. It could also help solve complex problems in finance, logistics, and materials science by performing tasks that are currently not feasible with classical computers.

4. What are the challenges in developing quantum computers?

One of the main challenges in developing quantum computers is maintaining the delicate quantum states of the qubits. Any external interference or noise can cause the qubits to lose their quantum properties, known as decoherence, and make the computation inaccurate. Additionally, scaling quantum computers to a larger number of qubits is a difficult engineering problem.

5. When will quantum computers be widely available?

Quantum computers are still in the early stages of development and are not yet widely available. However, companies like IBM, Google, and Microsoft are investing in research and development to make quantum computing more accessible. It is difficult to predict when quantum computers will become widely available, but experts estimate it could be within the next decade.
