The field of quantum mechanics was launched with scientists struggling to understand blackbody radiation.
My question is: what is the source of this observed radiation? Is it the nuclei in the matrix of the metal jiggling around ever more energetically as you heat up the metal? Or is it the electrons getting shot up to higher energy orbitals and then falling back down, like with the spectroscopy seen when you zap hydrogen gas with an electric arc?
Thanks.
