In summary, after skiing 3km east and 1.5km north, your friend is 26.6 degrees north of east from the starting point. When using compass directions, it would be said that your friend is N 26.6° E from the starting point. The general rule is that compass directions are given in a clockwise direction, with north being 0 degrees and east being 90 degrees.

Homework Statement

In what direction is your friend from the starting point after skiing 3km east and then 1.5km north?

Homework Equations

angle = tan-1(1.5km/3km)
= 26.6 degrees

The Attempt at a Solution

they want the answer in terms of degrees "north of east "
not sure what the rules are for the angle that I should use with north of east
as compared to that to use with east of north ? 90-26.6 = 63.4
is there any rule regarding clock-wise and counter-clock wise that would be useful?[/B]

Compass directions are given in a CW (not counter-CW) direction ordinarily.

For compass directions, north is 0 degrees, east is 90 degrees, south is 180 degrees, and west is 270 degrees.

This is the compass rose, with the directions also indicated in degrees:

Related to The difference between north of east and east of north

1. What is the difference between north of east and east of north?

The difference between north of east and east of north is the direction in which one is facing. North of east means facing north while being to the east of a reference point, while east of north means facing east while being to the north of a reference point. The order of these directions can affect the angle of rotation.

2. How do you determine whether something is north of east or east of north?

To determine whether something is north of east or east of north, you must first establish a reference point or direction. Then, you can use a compass or other navigation tools to determine which direction you are facing in relation to that reference point. Using a map or visual aids can also help in determining the direction.

3. Does the difference between north of east and east of north affect navigation?

Yes, the difference between north of east and east of north can affect navigation, especially in situations where precise direction is needed. For example, in aviation or marine navigation, the angle of rotation can greatly impact the accuracy of the intended route.

4. Are there any other directional terms that are similar to north of east and east of north?

Yes, there are other directional terms that are similar to north of east and east of north, such as west of north and north of west. These terms follow the same principle of facing a direction while being located to the side of a reference point.

5. What is the purpose of using directional terms like north of east and east of north?

The purpose of using directional terms like north of east and east of north is to provide a clear and specific way of describing a direction or location. These terms are particularly useful in navigation, map reading, and giving directions. They also help in avoiding confusion and misunderstandings when communicating about direction.
