Tension at all various of a wire rope subjected to tension

In summary, when a wire rope is subjected to tension, the tension will not remain the same at various points along the rope. This is due to the stretching of the rope, which can be modeled as a series of small masses connected by springs. In a simpler scenario where the rope is simply hung from the ceiling, the tension will still vary along the length of the rope.

Will the tension at various points of a wire rope remain same when subjected to tension?
for example let us assume that a wire rope is pretensioned and held between to fixed supports .So will the tension remain the same at the center and either of the anchorage points.

Nice question - since real rope all stretch a bit, the trick is to model the rope as a series of small masses connected by springs. The extension of the springs is proportional to the tension at that position in the rope.

Try a simpler problem:
What if you just hung the rope from the ceiling?

Related to Tension at all various of a wire rope subjected to tension

1. What is tension in a wire rope?

Tension is the force applied to a wire rope that causes it to stretch or become taut. This force is typically measured in pounds or newtons.

2. How does tension affect a wire rope?

Tension can cause a wire rope to stretch, deform, or break if the force is too great. It also plays a crucial role in the stability and strength of the wire rope.

3. How is tension calculated in a wire rope?

Tension is calculated by multiplying the force applied to the wire rope by its cross-sectional area. This gives the tension in pounds per square inch (psi) or newtons per square meter (N/m²).

4. What factors can affect tension in a wire rope?

The tension in a wire rope can be affected by factors such as the weight of the load, the angle of the wire rope, the type and quality of the wire rope, and the temperature and conditions it is exposed to.

5. How can tension be managed in a wire rope?

Tension in a wire rope can be managed by choosing the appropriate type and quality of wire rope for the application, regularly inspecting and maintaining the wire rope, and using proper techniques for handling and tensioning the wire rope.
