Homework Statement
A cable supports a cylindrical beam at point B. For the given loading conditions, what type of supports, applied at point A, would improperly constrain the beam, would constrain the beam and make the beam statically determinate, and would constrain the beam and make the beam statically indeterminate?
Would the following be:
A. Improper Constraints B. Constrained and Statically Determinate or C. Constrained and Statically Indeterminate
With the following types of support:
1. Fixed support
2. Single journal bearing resting on xy plane
3. Single thrust bearing resting on xy plane
4. Ball and Socket joint connected to the xz plane
5. Roller resting on the xy plane
6. Single smooth pin resting on the xy plane
7. Cable with yz components
Homework Equations
1. Fixed support has 6 unknown: Fx,y,z and Mx,y,z. The reactions are 3 forces and 3 couple moment components.
2. Single journal has 4 unknowns. The reactions are 2 forces and 2 couple moments which act perpendicular to the shaft.
3. Single thrust has 5 unknowns. The reactions are 3 forces and 2 couple moments.
4. Ball and Socket has 3 unknowns and the 3 rectangular force components.
5. Roller has 1 unknown. The reaction is a force which acts perpendicular to the surface at the point of contact.
6. Single smooth pin has 5 unknowns. The reactions are 3 force and 3 couple moments.
7. Cable has 1 unknown. The reaction is a force which acts away from the member in the known direction of the cable.
The Attempt at a Solution
I thought the smooth support and the roller where improper constraints because the forces where parallel.
I'm stuck with too much information I can't sort out. Please help.
