Stabalizing an egg drop project

In summary, the student has designed an egg drop project using foam molds and a cardboard egg filled with foam to protect the egg during a fall. They are trying to find a way to stabilize the egg without adding too much weight or inhibiting its free fall. They plan to use momentum and force equations to find a solution, such as weighing the bottom end or using a streamer.

Homework Statement

I have designed an egg drop project that performs just as I had hoped and portected the egg perfectly. I would need to make the object as stable as possible while it is falling.
My container is the foam molds that held the screen for my computer. The structure of the foam was designed to squish out. This allows the egg, which i have put in a larger cardboard egg filled with foam, to slide down slightly. The foams absorbs most of the impact and the friction on the cardboard egg the rest. My issue is i am graded on accuracy and weight. i cannot go over 300 grams i am currently at 201.5 grams. I must also hit a 30 cm by 30 cm for full points. Due to the shape of the foam it is hard to achieve a straight drop. I need a way to stabalize the egg without inhibiting it from free falling.

Homework Equations

Momentum and force equations an impulse
F=ma
P=mv
J=Ft

The Attempt at a Solution

I was considering weighing the bottom end or using a streamer ontop, though i do not know how effective the streamer would be.

Related to Stabalizing an egg drop project

What materials are needed for an egg drop project?

The materials needed for an egg drop project typically include an egg, various types of containers (such as plastic bags, cups, or boxes), padding materials (such as bubble wrap or cotton balls), tape, scissors, and a measuring tape.

How do I stabilize an egg for an egg drop project?

To stabilize an egg for an egg drop project, you can use a variety of padding materials such as bubble wrap, cotton balls, or shredded paper. Wrap the egg in several layers of padding and secure it with tape. You can also place the egg inside a container with padding around it for extra protection.

What is the best design for an egg drop project?

There is no one "best" design for an egg drop project, as it ultimately depends on the materials you have available and your own creativity. However, some popular designs include creating a parachute or using a crumple zone to absorb the impact of the egg.

How high should I drop the egg from?

The height at which you drop the egg depends on the requirements of your project or experiment. Some common heights used in egg drop projects range from 5 feet to 10 feet. It is important to also consider the stability of your design and the materials used when determining the height to drop from.

Can I reuse the egg for multiple drops?

Yes, you can reuse the egg for multiple drops as long as it remains intact and does not crack. However, it is important to inspect the egg and any padding materials after each drop to ensure they are still in good condition and provide enough protection for the egg.
