Solving the Mystery of the President's Shooting - Kinematics Physics Homework

In summary, the president was shot while at home by a bullet that came through the window and grazed his thigh. Four suspects were rounded up, all of whom were found with a rifle. Forensic scientists determined that the instantaneous velocity of the bullet as it hit the window was 350m/s and its average speed was 385m/s with an average deceleration of 45m/s^2. Each rifle was tested at a shooting range with varying results. The question remains as to who shot the president and why. The solution may involve calculating the deceleration of the bullet.

1PHYSICS KINEMATICS HELP?
President was shot while at home. While sitting on the sofa near the window, one bullet came through the window and grazed the president's thigh. The CID rounded up 4 suspects : A. B, C and D. All four were found with a rifle.
Forensic scientists have concluded from evidence that the instantaneous velocity of the bullet as it hits the window is about 350m/s and its average speed is about 385m/s. Also, it had an avg deceleration of about 45m/s2. Each rifle was taken to the shooting range to be tested.

welcome to pf!

hi mclj! welcome to pf!

i suppose they want you to calculate the deceleration? …

show us what you've tried, and where you're stuck, and then we'll know how to help!

Related to Solving the Mystery of the President's Shooting - Kinematics Physics Homework

1. How is kinematics used to solve the mystery of the President's shooting?

Kinematics is the study of motion, and it can be used to analyze the trajectory and velocity of the bullet that was fired at the President. By using equations and principles of kinematics, we can determine the position, speed, and acceleration of the bullet at different points in time, which can provide valuable insights into the shooting.

2. What factors are important to consider when solving this mystery using kinematics?

There are several key factors that must be taken into account, including the initial velocity of the bullet, the angle at which it was fired, the acceleration due to gravity, and any external forces that may have influenced the bullet's trajectory. Additionally, the properties of the gun and bullet, such as weight and aerodynamics, must also be considered.

3. Can kinematics be used to determine the exact location of the shooter?

No, kinematics alone cannot determine the exact location of the shooter. It can provide information about the bullet's trajectory, but other evidence and investigative techniques must be used to pinpoint the exact location of the shooter.

4. How can uncertainty and error affect the accuracy of using kinematics to solve this mystery?

Uncertainty and error in measurements and calculations can greatly affect the accuracy of using kinematics to solve this mystery. Small errors in initial velocity or angle measurements can result in significant differences in the final calculated position of the bullet. It is important to carefully consider and minimize uncertainty and error when using kinematics in this case.

5. Are there any limitations to using kinematics to solve this mystery?

Yes, there are limitations to using kinematics in this case. Kinematics assumes that the motion of the bullet is in a vacuum and is not affected by air resistance or other external factors. In reality, these factors can significantly influence the bullet's trajectory and must be taken into consideration. Additionally, kinematics cannot provide information about the intentions or actions of the shooter, which may be crucial in solving the mystery.
