In summary, the conversation discusses the difficulty of solving a problem with four unknowns and only two equations. It is mentioned that there are actually two additional equations relating to the projections of the unknowns onto the x and y-axis. The conversation also suggests drawing a triangle of forces for a specific joint.

I'm unsure how to go about solving this. There's 4 unknowns. Ax Ay Cx and Cy but isn't there only 2 equations (sum of forces in x and y direction are equal to 0) that can be created in this situation?

The net moment on each strut should be 0 as well.

No, there are two unknowns, the forces A and C at the supports. There are two equations. Every one of your "unknowns" must be written in terms of A and C (i.e. their projections onto the x and y-axis).

I am also stuck on this question. any hints would be much appreciated :)

Draw the triangle of forces for joint B

You have two additional equations. One relates Ax and Ay. The other relates Cx and Cy. Can you sketch in the expected directions of the reactions?

Related to Solve 4 Unknowns: Statics Question

What is a statics question?

A statics question is a type of problem in which the forces acting on an object or system are analyzed to determine their effects on the object's motion or equilibrium. It involves using mathematical equations and principles to solve for unknown variables in a given scenario.

What are the 4 unknowns in a statics question?

The 4 unknowns in a statics question typically refer to the forces acting on an object in the x and y directions, as well as the moments or torques acting on the object. These unknowns are usually represented by variables such as Fx, Fy, Mx, and My.

How do you solve for 4 unknowns in a statics question?

To solve for 4 unknowns in a statics question, you will need to use a combination of equations and principles, such as Newton's laws of motion and the equations for equilibrium. You will also need to draw a free body diagram to visualize the forces acting on the object and set up equations based on the given information. Then, you can solve for the unknown variables using algebraic manipulation.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when solving a statics question?

Some common mistakes to avoid when solving a statics question include not properly labeling forces and moments, using incorrect equations or principles, and not considering all the forces acting on the object. It is also important to check your units and make sure they are consistent throughout the problem.

Can you use a calculator to solve a statics question?

Yes, a calculator can be a useful tool when solving a statics question. However, it is important to understand the concepts and principles behind the equations you are using and not rely solely on the calculator. It is also important to double check your calculations and make sure they are accurate.
