Recurrence relation of tangent

In summary, a recurrence relation of tangent is a mathematical expression used to define a tangent sequence, and it is used in mathematics to efficiently find the value of a sequence at any given term. The general form of this relation is tn = a(tn-1) + b(tn-2), and it differs from a general recursive formula as it specifically deals with tangent sequences. Some recurrence relations of tangent can be solved with a closed-form formula, but not all have a closed-form solution.

Is it possible to find a recurrence relation of tan(nx) where n is a positive integer and x is a real variable?

My friend said that it is possible.

I don't see how to do it.

Does anyone have a way to do it?

You should know the sum formula tan(A+ B)= (tan(A)+ tan(B))/(1+ tan(A)(tan(B)).

Using that, tan((n+1)x)= tan(x+ nx= (tan(x)+ tan(nx))/(1+ tan(x)tan(nx))
or, if we write Tn= tan(nx),

Tn+1= (T_1+ T_n)/(1+ T_1T_n), a recurrance relation.

Related to Recurrence relation of tangent

1. What is a recurrence relation of tangent?

A recurrence relation of tangent is a mathematical expression that describes the relationship between two consecutive terms of a tangent sequence. It is a way to define a sequence using its previous terms.

2. How is a recurrence relation of tangent used in mathematics?

A recurrence relation of tangent is used in mathematics to find the value of a tangent sequence at any given term, without having to manually calculate each term. It allows for a more efficient and organized way of solving problems involving tangent sequences.

3. What is the general form of a recurrence relation of tangent?

The general form of a recurrence relation of tangent is tn = a(tn-1) + b(tn-2), where tn represents the nth term in the sequence, and a and b are constants. This form can vary slightly depending on the specific problem or sequence being studied.

4. How is a recurrence relation of tangent different from a recursive formula?

A recurrence relation of tangent is a type of recursive formula that specifically deals with tangent sequences. However, it differs from a general recursive formula in that it follows a specific pattern and is used to describe the relationship between consecutive terms in a tangent sequence.

5. Can a recurrence relation of tangent be solved using a closed-form formula?

Yes, some recurrence relations of tangent can be solved using a closed-form formula, also known as an explicit formula. This formula expresses the nth term of the sequence directly in terms of n, rather than relying on previous terms in the sequence. However, not all recurrence relations of tangent have a closed-form solution.
